Introduction:
1.1 Background:

In the context of today's tertiary education, tertiary students are

faced with an increasing workload along with many strict
requirements on deadlines for completing assignments, projects,
and exams. Meeting deadlines is a criterion for assessing learning
outcomes and reflects tertiary students' sense of responsibility,
professionalism, and self-management ability. However, many
tertiary students have difficulty controlling their time, leading to
delays, stress, and reduced learning efficiency. One of the core skills
that helps students overcome this problem is time management.
This is planning, allocating, monitoring, and using time reasonably to
achieve the set goals.

According to tertiary students of Ho Chi Minh City University of

Foreign Languages and Information Technology (HUFLIT), time
management becomes more and more important when the learning
environment requires flexibility between many subjects,
extracurricular activities, and part-time jobs. However, the level of
awareness of HUFLIT tertiary students about the role of this skill as
well as the appropriate and effective time management strategies
for them has not been studied in depth.

1.2 Previous studies:

Based on previous studies we have reviewed, we found that

effective time management consistently emerged as a key factor
influencing tertiary’ academic performance. The road to success in
social life passes through effective and efficient working which is
only possible via time management. Time management plays a vital
role in improving tertiary ’s’ academic performance and
achievements. Every tertiary student should have time management
ability which includes setting goals & priorities, using time
management mechanisms, and being organized in using time. Time
management practices influence the academic achievement of
university students in higher education in a developing country.
Some of the tertiaries do not have good time management skills
which has negatively affected their life and academics. Beyond
simple scheduling, tertiaries often face paradoxes when personal
and cultural rhythms complicate linear views of time. Studies also
indicate that time management behaviors enhance perceived
control, improve well-being, and reduce stress, although their direct
effect on performance is less clear. Process-based approaches show
that strategies succeed only when they strengthen a sense of
control, helping tertiaries reduce stress and feel more satisfied,
while contemporary findings highlight that structured strategies
reduce stress, foster sustainable habits, and support the timely
submission of academic work.

1.3 Maintribution:

In this research, the group aims to explore the central problem of

time management skills and their connection to HUFLIT tertiary
students’ ability to meet academic deadlines. Two main questions
guide the study:

(1) How do HUFLIT tertiary students perceive the role of time

management skills in meeting their academic deadlines?

(2) Which time management strategies are most effective for HUFLIT
students in improving their ability to meet deadlines?

Based on these questions, the objectives are to examine students’

awareness of time management, identify effective strategies, and
propose potential solutions for better practices. The study is carried
out in the context of HUFLIT, a university known for its diverse
training programs that involve multiple assignments, essays,
presentations, and group projects. With a credit-based curriculum
and frequent overlapping deadlines, effective time management
becomes an essential factor that directly influences students’
academic success.
