FEC Threshold
FEC Threshold is useful for creating a mask from a footage file that does not currently have an
alpha channel.

Threshold defines the level below which pixels are filled with dark values. The range is from 0 to
256. A setting of 256 gives a complete threshold to black effect.
Softness controls the smoothness of the transition between regions above and below the
specified threshold. A softness of 0 produces a binary output—pixels are either fully “on”
or fully “off”. Larger softness values create a smoother transition between these two
extremes by mapping values in the vicinity of the threshold value to intermediate
grayscale values.
When the Clamp Softness checkbox is enabled, the effective Softness amount is
gradually reduced the closer the Threshold amount approaches either 0 or 100. When
Threshold is 0 or 100 the softness is effectively 0 and the resulting output is either fully
black or fully white. When disabled, image softening is still apparent even when the
Threshold is 0 or 100 and the image will not appear fully black or fully white at those
extremes.
The Threshold menu lets you choose the data to apply to the threshold:
• Luminance limits the resulting image to black and white based on the threshold value
selected.
• Lightness limits the resulting image to the lightness values of the source image.
• Saturation limits the resulting image to the intensity of each color’s hue in the source
image.
• R, G, and B assign the red, green, and blue channels separately. RGB values are
derived from the channels in the source image.
• RGB Channels assigns the red, green, and blue channels together.
• Alpha and Alpha Channel limit the resulting image to the alpha information being
passed through the source image.
Invert reverses the colors of the current image.
Mix with Original blends the source and filtered images. Use this parameter to animate the
effect from the unfiltered to the filtered image without adjusting other settings, or to reduce the
effect by mixing it with the source image.
The Motion Tracker parameter group allows you to track the motion of an object, and then use
the motion path data to control another aspect of the effect by applying a matchmove to it. The
parameters that can be affected depend upon the filter. (For more information on using the
Motion Tracker, please click on its Help banner located at the top of the Motion Tracker
parameter group).
Once an object is tracked, the track data can be applied to FEC Threshold’s
PixelChooser by using the Apply menu located inside the Motion Tracker parameter
group.
The Pixel Chooser parameter group contains the PixelChooser - which is included in many
Boris filters (like Boris Continuum Complete), and provides several methods to selectively filter an
image. (For more information on using the PixelChooser, please click on its Help banner located
at the top of the Pixel Chooser parameter group).
