TODAY: DAY 1
PINHOLE CAMERA (ZERO-LEVEL EXPLANATION)
🔹 WHAT IS A CAMERA? (VERY BASIC)
A camera is a device that:
Collects light
Forms an image of objects
Without light → no image
🔹 WHAT IS A PINHOLE CAMERA?
A pinhole camera is the simplest camera.
It has:
1. A closed box
2. A very tiny hole
3. A screen inside
Light enters only through the hole.
🔹 HOW IMAGE IS FORMED (STEP BY STEP)
1. Light reflects from an object
2. Rays travel in straight lines
3. Rays pass through the pinhole
4. Rays hit the screen
5. Image is formed
🔹 WHY IMAGE IS UPSIDE DOWN?
👉 Very important exam point
Because:
Top of object → goes down
Bottom of object → goes up
Light rays cross at the pinhole.
🔹 SIMPLE DAILY-LIFE EXAMPLE
Stand near a window with a small hole in curtain.
You will see inverted outside view on opposite wall.
That is pinhole camera.
🔹 PINHOLE CAMERA MODEL (GEOMETRY – SIMPLE)
If:
Object is far → image is small
Object is near → image is big
Relation:
1
Image size ∝
Distance
(You don’t need heavy maths in exam)
🔹 ADVANTAGES
Very simple
No lens distortion
Infinite depth of field
🔹 DISADVANTAGES
Very dark image
Low clarity
Not practical
⭐ EXAM-READY 10-MARK ANSWER
Explain the Pinhole Camera Model
A pinhole camera is the simplest imaging system consisting of a light-tight box with a small aperture and an image plane. Light rays
from a 3D object travel in straight lines and pass through the pinhole to form an inverted image on the image plane. The inversion
occurs because rays from the top of the object cross at the pinhole and reach the bottom of the image plane and vice versa. The
pinhole camera model is important in computer vision because it provides a simple geometric relationship between 3D world points
and 2D image points. Although it produces sharp images theoretically, it suffers from low brightness and diffraction effects and hence
is not used practically.
📝 VERY SHORT NOTES (REVISION)
Simplest camera model
Uses tiny hole instead of lens
Image is inverted
Light travels in straight lines
Used for theoretical analysis
