Hello and welcome to the next tutorial about painting the Steel Rook.
On the first page you can see a photo which I will use as my reference from which I will copy
reflections and shadows. Monument:
Caramel Brown
I take my reference photos in the same place and environment in which I take all of my photos
and thanks to that real reflections of light will appear on the model in the same places where I
will paint them.
In this step I painted his armor with Dark Neutral Grey, and those parts of his pick-axe that I want
to look like brass with Dark Green Brown.
Next I painted the brown "coin" on his armor with Caramel Brown, because I want it to be closer
to gold, and this will be the basecolor for that.
After that I painted with Light Umber reflection of the ground on the „blade” of his weapon.

Now I painted with Neutral Grey the first reflections on his armor, following the real reflections
from the reference photo. Next I painted the brass parts of the handle of the pixk-axe and the

„coin” on his chest with Bright Yellow Ochre. Because these elements of the model are flat and Hobbies:
facing the source of light with its entire surface there is almost no space where the light can Bright Neutral
bend, so they will be entirely bright without any color transitions. Grey
I also already painted the brightest reflection of light on the blade of the pick-axe with Bright
Neutral Grey paint, but in the future I will make it even brighter with White Grey.

Now I painted sides of the details on the „coin” with Dark Green Brown in order to make them
more visible. After that I painted with Orange Brown reflection of light on the bottom of the brass
handle. Monument:

Next I painted with Light Umber reflections of the ground on the armor. Brown
I made those shapes bend on the sides of the chest armor to follow its shape, because that's
how light would behave in reality, and I also made the brown one irregular on the top in order to
present that the ground that it reflects might be uneven. I also painted spots with this color to re-
present objects that can be closer to the model and are bright. Next on the right side of it you
can see that this reflection is painted with Neutral Grey. It’s painted with this color because there
is his arm on the way, so it would reflect this part of the armor, not the ground. On the left side
of it you can see a bit of brown color, because it would reflect the brown belt in there, and in the
middle on the bottom part of this armor there is a spot painted with Orange Brown, because it re-
presents reflection of the belt buckle. In the end I highlighted the armor with Bright Neutral Grey
there where it shines on the reference photo.

Now I painted with Dark Umber new lines of color on the sides of areas painted with Light
Umber (on the pick-axe too).
Next I mixed Neutral Grey with Bright Neutral Grey and with this mixture I painted the final
reflections on his „wings”, and lines of color between areas painted with Bright Neutral Grey and
Neutral Grey, in order to create more gentle color transition.
Then I painted a few black dots on the chest armor in the darkest parts, i order to present with
them other elements of the ground that might be very dark.

In this step I turned on my third lamp so the photos will be a bit bright from now on.
Now I diluted Dark Umber a lot, applied it only on the tip of my brush, removed most of it in a

piece of paper and gently glazed bottom part of the reflection of the ground on the chest in order Hobbies:
to create shadow that would naturally appear in there. Next I gently glazed borders of the rest Dark Umber
of Light Umber reflections on the armor. I did it also on the areas like bottom part of his arm, but
the shadow on the photos is very strong so it's barely visible. How I make those glazes you can

Next I created smooth color transitions between the layers painted with Neutral Grey and Dark Hobbies:
Light Umber
Neutral Grey. This color transitions I made in a bit different way. I diluted a little bit color from the
brighter layer ( Neutral Grey) removed most of it in a piece of paper forming pointy tip during the
process, and then painted many stripes alongside borders of the brighter and darker layer (Dark
Neutral Grey). I made a video tutorial about this blending technique and you can watch it here:

Now I repainted the „coin” with Bright Pale Yellow because I decided that it shouldn’t be made
from the same material like elements of the pick-axe, and because it’s facing the source of light
with its full, flat surface there is no space for color transitions in there and that's why there is only
one color in there.
After that I glazed the top sides of the reflections of the ground with Dark Umber, and next I
created smooth color transitions between the layers painted with the mix G1 and Bright Neutral
Grey. Painting those color transitions took me awhile, so don’t worry if it goes slow.
In the Previous step I used White Grey for the final highlights, but if you don’t have this paint
then you can mix 80% of white paint with 20% of White Grey paint.
The whole idea is that this color is supposed to be just slightly darker then pure white paint.

Now I created smooth color transitions between the brightest layers of colors on the model.
As you can see in the previous step I painted reflection of blue color on the square under his

elbow. Now I repainted it with Jade, because this part of armor would reflect the color from his Orange Brown
„skirt” that in this specific place shines in green color.

Now I fixed shapes and edges of many details with black paint (like between the „feathers”) and basically fixed all the
small mistakes that I made during paining this model.
As you can see the process itself is pretty easy, it just requires a bit patience and experience with my blending
technique.
At this point when I look on his „skirt” I start to like it more and more, and I feel that it might actually leave it like this,
but I will make my final decision when I will finish painting the rest of the model.
On the next pages you will see bigger pictures, and the model on them is also gently illuminated from below in order
to better present all of the details that now disappear in shadows..
