Construction of Magnel diagram
Construct the Magnel diagram for the 200 x 350 mm x 10 m beam at the following details.
Determine also the minimum and maximum possible values of prestress force. Assume a
maximum possible eccentricity of 125mm. The beam carries uniformly distributed load of 3
kN/m inclusive selfweight. Given details:
Given: At transfer, minimum stress f’min= -1.0 N/mm2
maximum stress f’max = 16 N/mm2
At service, minimum stress fmin = 0.0 N/mm2
maximum stress fmax = 24 N/mm2
Loss factor K = 0.8
Area = A = 200 x 350 = 70000 mm2
Section moduli = z = bh2/6 = 200 x 3502/6 = 4.08 x 106 mm3
Solution:
Determine the minimum and maximum moments
Selfweight of beam = 0.2 x 0.35 x 25 = 1.75 kN/m
Mmin = 1.75 x 102/8 = 21.9 kNm (Only selfweight)
Mmax = 3 x 102/8 = 59.4 kNm

It can be seen
Maximum 106/P0 = 2415, hence minimum P0 = 414 kN (e = 121mm)
Minimum 106/P0 = 862, hence maximum P0 = 1160 kN (e = 17mm)

Example 11.6 (page 353)
Calculation of cable zone
Determine the cable zone limits at mid-span and ends of the member for a constant initial
prestress force of 700kN. Given the design data as follows:
Given: At transfer, minimum stress f’min= -1.0 N/mm2
maximum stress f’max = 16 N/mm2
At service, minimum stress fmin = 0.0 N/mm2
maximum stress fmax = 24 N/mm2
Loss factor K = 0.8
Area = A = 200 x 350 = 70000 mm2
Section moduli = zt = zb = bh2/6 = 200 x 3502/6 = 4.08 x 106 mm3
Mmin = 1.75 x 102/8 = 21.9 kNm (Only selfweight)
Mmax = 3 x 102/8 = 59.4 kNm
(a) End of beam
Limits to cable eccentricity are given by equation
Note that there are no moment due to external loading at the end of simply supported beam,
Mmax = Mmin = 0. Apply all four equations:

Ans: At the end of the beam where the moments are zero, and for zt = zb, the inequality
expressions can apply with the tendon eccentricities above and below the neutral axis (e
positive or negative). So that e must lie within the range 35mm and -58mm.

Ans: at mid span, the eccentricity must be within 47.8 to 66mm.
The tendon profiles can be illustrated as follows:

If the Magnel diagram is plotted, there is no need the above detailed calculation. Say Pi =
700kN (or 106/Pi = 1428), the eccentricity found within 48mm to 66mm at midspan.
