PROJECT TITLE

“Electromagnets, Electric Motor, Electric Generator

& Right-Hand Thumb Rule”

SUBMITTED BY
Anushka Jain
Class 10th A, Roll No. 2 (1002)
Euro International School

SUBMITTED TO
Mr. Pankaj Mehra

ACADEMIC YEAR:
2025–26
SYNOPSIS
This project explains the working principles of electromagnets, electric
motors, electric generators, and the Right-Hand Thumb Rule, which form
the foundation of electricity and magnetism in Class 10 CBSE Physics.
Each concept is explained through simple definitions, labelled diagrams,
applications, and key differences.
This project helped me clearly understand how electricity can produce
magnetism, how motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy,
and how generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy,
making them essential in real-life applications.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my special thanks to the principal of
our school Mrs. Neha Mathur Ma’am and my subject
teacher Mr. Pankaj Mehra
for giving me the opportunity to prepare this project on the
topic of Electromagnets, electric motor, generator, right-
hand thumb rule.
This project helped me a lot to understand about the
concepts of electromagnetism, electric motors,
generators, and the important Right-Hand Thumb Rule.

ELECTROMAGNET

Definition Applications
An electromagnet is a magnet formed Electric bells
when electric current flows through a Cranes for lifting scrap metal
coil of wire wound around a soft iron Maglev trains
core. Relays and speakers

How it Works
Current passes through the coil.
The coil produces a magnetic field.
The soft iron core becomes strongly
magnetized.
When current stops magnetism disappears.
RIGHT-HAND THUMB RULE

Statement
According to the Right-Hand Thumb Rule,
if the thumb of the right hand points in
the direction of current, then the curled
fingers show the direction of the
magnetic field around the conductor.

Use
This rule helps find the direction of the
magnetic field around a straight current-
carrying wire.

ELECTRIC MOTOR

Definition Working Principle

An electric motor converts electrical It works on the principle that a current
energy → mechanical energy. carrying conductor placed in a magnetic
field experiences a force (Fleming’s Left
Hand Rule).

Main Parts
Armature coil
Split-ring commutator
Permanent magnets

Definition Working Principle

An electric generator converts It works on the principle of electromagnetic
mechanical energy → electrical energy. induction: When a coil rotates in a magnetic
field, it induces current.
