SEISMIC DESIGN COURSE
Seismic design philosophy:
1. Life Safety: The paramount objective of seismic design is to protect human life. The design aims to prevent
structural collapse or significant damage that could result in casualties during an earthquake. This is
achieved by designing structures to withstand the expected ground motions and ensuring adequate
strength, ductility, and redundancy.
2. Structural Integrity: Seismic design seeks to maintain the structural integrity of buildings under earthquake
forces. The goal is to minimize damage and prevent progressive collapse, enabling the structure to withstand
the expected ground shaking. This involves designing robust connections, appropriate member sizes, and
detailing techniques that enhance ductility.
3. Serviceability: Seismic design considers the functionality of structures during and after earthquakes. While
safety is paramount, it is also important to limit non-structural damage and maintain functionality for
essential services, such as emergency egress, utilities, and post-earthquake operations. Design measures
such as vibration control and architectural considerations play a role in achieving this objective.
ENG. SHADI QUMSEYA
SEISMIC DESIGN COURSE
Seismic design philosophy:
4. Performance-Based Design: Modern seismic design philosophy emphasizes performance-based design
approaches. Rather than focusing solely on meeting prescriptive code requirements, performance-
based design aims to define specific performance objectives and levels. These objectives can include
limiting damage, reducing downtime, and ensuring occupant comfort, among others. The design
process then considers these objectives in evaluating and selecting appropriate design strategies.
5. Resilience: Seismic design philosophy now increasingly incorporates resilience concepts. Resilient
design aims to reduce the societal and economic impact of earthquakes by designing structures that
can quickly recover and return to full functionality. This may involve incorporating post-earthquake
functionality, modular systems, and considering the broader community context in the design process.
6. Code Compliance: Seismic design adheres to established codes and standards specific to the region or
jurisdiction. These codes outline minimum requirements for designing structures against seismic forces. The
design philosophy recognizes the importance of code compliance to ensure a baseline level of safety and is
often supplemented by additional design considerations based on the specific project requirements.

SEISMIC DESIGN COURSE
Seismic design limit states:
• Serviceability limit state: relatively frequent earthquakes inducing comparatively minor intensity of
ground shaking should not interfere with functionality, such as the normal operation of a building or the
plant it contains. This means that no damage needing repair should occur to the structure or to non
structural components, including contents. The appropriate design effort will need to concentrate on the
control and limitation of displacements that could occur during the anticipated earthquake. Reinforced
concrete and masonry structures may develop considerable cracking at the serviceability limit state, but no
significant yielding of reinforcement, resulting in large cracks, nor crushing of concrete or masonry should
result. The frequency with which the occurrence of an earthquake corresponding to the serviceability limit
state may be anticipated will depend on the importance of preserving functionality of the building. Thus, for
office buildings, the service- ability limit state may be chosen to correspond to a level of shaking likely to
occur, on average, once every 50 years (i.e., a 50-year-returnperiod earth- quake). For a hospital, fire station,
or telecommunications center, which require a high degree of protection to preserve functionality during an
emergency, an earthquake with a much longer return period will be appropriate.
ENG. SHADI QUMSEYA
SEISMIC DESIGN COURSE
Seismic design limit states:
• Damage Control Limit State: for ground shaking of intensity greater than that corresponding to the
serviceability limit state, some damage may occur. Yielding of reinforcement may result in wide cracks that
require repair measures such as injection grouting to avoid later corrosion problems. Also, crushing or
spalling of concrete may occur, necessitating replacement of unsound concrete. A second limit state may be
defined which marks the boundary between economically repairable damage and damage that is irreparable
or which cannot be repaired economically. Ground shaking of intensity likely to induce response
corresponding to the damage control limit state should have a low probability of occurrence during the
expected life of the building. It is expected that after an earthquake causes this or lesser intensity of ground
shaking, the building can be successfully repaired and reinstated to full service.
Negligible structural damage
Minor nonstructural damage
Building is safe to occupy but may not function
Limited interruption of operations
Repair Cost < 15%
ENG. SHADI QUMSEYA
SEISMIC DESIGN COURSE
Seismic design limit states:
• Survival Limit State: In the development of modem seismic design strategies, very strong emphasis is
placed on the criterion that loss of life should be prevented even during strongest ground shaking feasible
for the site. For this reason, particular attention must be given to those aspects of structural behavior that
are relevant to this single most important design consideration: survival. For most buildings, extensive
damage to both the structure and building contents, resulting from such severe but rare events, will have to
be accepted. In some cases this damage will be irreparable, but collapse must not occur. Unless structures
are proportioned to possess exceptionally large strength with respect to lateral forces, usually involving
significant cost increase, inelastic deformations during large seismic events are to be expected. Therefore,
the designer will need to concentrate on structural qualities which will ensure that for the expected duration
of an earthquake, relatively large displacements can be accommodated without significant loss in lateral
force resistance, and that integrity of the structure to support gravity loads is maintained. It must be
appreciated that the boundaries between different intensities of ground shaking, requiring each of the
foregoing three levels of protection to be provided cannot be defined precisely. A much larger degree of
uncertainty is involved in the recommendations of building codes to determine the intensities of lateral
seismic design forces than for any other kind of loading to which a building might be exposed. The capacity
design process, aims to accommodate this uncertainty. To achieve this, structural systems must be conceived
which are tolerant to the crudeness in seismological predictions.

Fundamentals of dynamic analysis:
Let us define that the total displacement 𝑈𝑈𝑇𝑇 = 𝑈𝑈𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠 + 𝑈𝑈𝑔𝑔
𝑈𝑈𝑇𝑇 total displacement
𝑈𝑈𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆 relative displacement of the structure
𝑈𝑈𝑔𝑔 Ground displacement
The dynamic equilibrium equation: (D’Alembert principle):
𝑓𝑓𝑠𝑠 + 𝑓𝑓𝑐𝑐 + 𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑖 = 𝐹𝐹 𝑡𝑡
Where:
𝑓𝑓𝑠𝑠 Static internal forces = 𝐾𝐾. 𝑈𝑈𝑆𝑆𝑆𝑆 = 𝐾𝐾. 𝑈𝑈
𝑓𝑓𝑐𝑐 Viscous (damping) force = 𝐶𝐶. 𝑈𝑈̇
𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑖 Inertial forces = 𝑀𝑀. 𝑈𝑈̈
𝐹𝐹(𝑡𝑡) Total external forces that depend on time = 𝐹𝐹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒ℎ𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞 + 𝐹𝐹𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔𝑔
𝐹𝐹𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒𝑒ℎ𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞𝑞 = −𝑀𝑀𝑈𝑈𝑔𝑔̈
ENG. SHADI QUMSEYA

Fundamentals of dynamic analysis:
So the equilibrium equation becomes:
𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈̈ + 𝐶𝐶 𝑈𝑈̇ + 𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈 = −𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈𝑔𝑔̈ + 𝐹𝐹𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠
Incase of 𝑈𝑈̇ = 𝑈𝑈̈ = 𝑈𝑈𝑔𝑔̈ = 0 the equilibrium equation becomes
𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈 = 𝐹𝐹𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠

Fundamentals of dynamic analysis:
The damping can be either Natural or Artificial:
Natural Damper’s:
• External viscous damping caused by air surrounding the building. Since the viscosity of air is low, this effect is negligible
in comparison to other types of damping.
• Internal viscous damping associated with the material viscosity. This is proportional to velocity and increases in
proportion to the natural frequency of the structure.
• Friction damping, also called Coulomb damping, occurring at connections and support points of the structure. It is a
constant, irrespective of the velocity or amount of displacement.
• Hysteretic damping which contributes to a major portion of the energy absorbed in ductile structures

Let’s return to our Dynamic equilibrium equation:
𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈̈ + 𝐶𝐶 𝑈𝑈̇ + 𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈 = −𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈𝑔𝑔̈ + 𝐹𝐹𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠
The most simple form of this equation:
𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈̈ + 𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈 = 0
Dividing by M:
𝐾𝐾
𝑈𝑈̈ + 𝑈𝑈 = 0
𝑀𝑀
𝑈𝑈̈ + 𝜔𝜔2 𝑈𝑈 = 0
𝐾𝐾
Where 𝜔𝜔 = and it is called circular frequency of the system
𝑀𝑀
2𝜋𝜋
We can define 𝑇𝑇 = fundamental period of the system [Seconds]
𝜔𝜔

Also we can define 𝑓𝑓 = natural frequency of the system [Hertz]
𝑇𝑇
ENG. SHADI QUMSEYA
SEISMIC DESIGN COURSE
Fundamentals of dynamic analysis:
𝑈𝑈̈ + 𝜔𝜔2 𝑈𝑈 = 0
The solution to this differential equation from second order:
𝑈𝑈 𝑡𝑡 = 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 sin 𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 + 𝜃𝜃 …………………………… (1)
Where 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 is the initial position (initial shape of the system)
𝜃𝜃 is a phase angle (depends on the initial conditions)
When second time derivative is taken
𝑈𝑈̈ = −𝜔𝜔2 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 sin 𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 + 𝜃𝜃 = −𝜔𝜔2 𝑈𝑈 …………………………….(2)
Substituting 1 and 2 in the 𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈̈ + 𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈 = 0 we obtain:
−𝑀𝑀 𝜔𝜔2 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 sin 𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 + 𝜃𝜃 + 𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 sin 𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 + 𝜃𝜃 = 0
𝐾𝐾 − 𝜔𝜔2 𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 sin 𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 + 𝜃𝜃 = 0
ENG. SHADI QUMSEYA
SEISMIC DESIGN COURSE
Fundamentals of dynamic analysis:
𝐾𝐾 − 𝜔𝜔2 𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 sin 𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 + 𝜃𝜃 = 0
this is a typical problem of eigenvalues and eigenvectors
𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 − 𝜔𝜔2 𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 = 0
𝐾𝐾 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 = 𝜔𝜔2 𝑀𝑀 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜
The associated 𝜔𝜔2 , 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 couples are solutions for the equation of motion.
2𝜋𝜋 1
Where 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 is a vector that gives a shape of the system associated with a period 𝑇𝑇 = (or frequency 𝑓𝑓 = )
𝜔𝜔 𝑇𝑇
So for every structure independently of the load we can calculate a natural period (or frequency) that is
associated with a deformed shape. And this is a pure property of the structure that depends on the mass
and the stiffness of the structure.
Where the stiffness of the structure depends on the geometry and the material.
How many frequencies or associated couples of 𝜔𝜔2 , 𝑈𝑈𝑜𝑜 we can calculate?
Ans.: as much as the nodes of the system!!!!

From an engineering/design perspective, it is often not essential to know the
instantaneous response at every moment. It is sufficient to know the maximum
values of forces and displacements.
In dynamics, the response spectrum refers to the diagram of the maximum
absolute value of displacement, velocity, or acceleration of a simple oscillator
as its period T varies.

Response Spectrum:
To generate a response spectrum:
1) We insert an accelerogram (registered or artificial) to a simple system with damping ratio
2) For a noted period (T0) we analyze and register the maximum acceleration a0.
3) We repeat the previous operation for n periods T1,T2,…..Tn
4) Finally we get n couples of data for period and acceleration (T , a) that can be represented in graph
In this way we get the elastic RESPONSE SPECTRUM for the considered earthquake.

Once we know the ground motion characteristics (Ug) that depends on the Soil of the site and the Peal
ground acceleration (PGA). We can get from the seismic hazard map our response spectrum diagram in
accordance of the code we want to use.
Then we construct the response spectrum, at the time we know the fundamental period of the structure
we get the acceleration.
By multiplying the acceleration with mass we get the SEISMIC FORCE

Center of stiffness
Center of rigidity is the stiffness centroid within a floor-diaphragm plan. When the center of rigidity is
subjected to lateral loading, the floor diaphragm will experience only translational displacement.
Other levels are free to translate and rotate since behavior is coupled both in plan and along height.
For a given floor diaphragm, center of rigidity is calculated through the following process:
• Case 1 applies a global-X unit load to an arbitrary point, perhaps the center of mass, such that the
diaphragm rotates Rzx.
• Case 2 applies a global-Y unit load at the same point, causing rotation Rzy.
• Case 3 applies a unit moment about global-Z, causing rotation Rzz. These three load cases are
shown in Figure 1

It is that the shear force on the wall will be
divided in 2 equal parts due to the Fx, as the
torsion is 0.

Shear forces due to Fy
The shear force in wall2 is 1kN
And we notice the shear force in the wall 1
and 2 that make a torsion force equals to
0.3125 × 3 = 0.9375𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘
And the torsion moment equals to

Spectrum Response Analysis
In the response spectral analysis, the maximum
response value is determined for each mode,
and then the total response value is predicted by
combining these response using appropriate
combination method. Figure 7.1 shows the
process of finding the maximum response value
for structures with different time period and
showing the maximum displacement value
corresponding to these period on the graph.

Spectrum Response Analysis
After analysis, users should review the base shear due to all
modes, reported in the Response Spectrum Base Reaction
Table. If the dynamic base shear reported is more than
certain percentage of the static base shear depending on
the code provision, say for instance 90% as per UBC, no
further action is required. However, if dynamic base shear is
less than 90% of the static base shear, then the scale factor
should be adjusted such that the response-spectrum base
shear matches 90% of the static base shear.
As per UBC, The response spectrum scale factor is I / R.
Hence for case where the above condition is not met, the
new scale factor would be (I / R) * (0.9 * static base shear /
response-spectrum base shear). Analysis should then be re-
run with this scale factor specified in the response-
spectrum case.

Load Combination
These combinations are intended to cover conditions where
uniform ductility in the structural system is lacking due to
vertical discontinuities The parameter Em represents the
maximum earthquake force that can be developed in a
structure. The overstrength factor Ωo is equivalent to 3/8Rw
factor that appears in previous UBC requirements to address
nonductile issues as columns supporting discontinuous shear
walls. It should be noted that UBC special load
combinations do not consider the effect of vertical
accelerations, whereas ASCE 7-02, discussed presently does
include this effect.
