Introduction
• The deep drawing process is a manufacturing technique used to
form sheet metal into a three-dimensional shape, typically a cup or
a box-like structure, with depth greater than its diameter or width.
3
Deep Drawing Operation
• In this process, a flat sheet of metal is clamped
around its edges and drawn into a die cavity by a
punch, which forces the metal to deform and take
on the shape of the cavity. The metal undergoes
plastic deformation.

Deep Drawing Process Setup
1. Punch
In deep drawing, the punch serves as a forming
tool rather than a cutting tool, and it plays a
crucial role in shaping the sheet metal into a
three-dimensional component with a deep cavity
or cup-like structure.

2. Die
• The die in deep drawing is a specialized mold
typically made of hardened steel that defines
the final shape of the drawn part.
• It consists of a cavity that corresponds to the
shape of the desired part.
• The die is mounted on the lower part of the
deep drawing press and provides the forming
surface against which the sheet metal is drawn

3. Blank Holder
• In deep drawing operations, a blank holder is
used to control the material flow and prevent
wrinkling or tearing of the sheet metal during
the forming process.

Shear Analysis
Notes
• Diameter of hole = Diameter of punch
• Diameter of blank = Diameter of die

Solved Examples
• Example 1 :
A cooking pot of 80 mm inner diameter, and 50 mm height is produced by
deep drawing of a stainless-steel circular blank of thickness t = 2 mm. The
shear strength of the material used is 330 MPa.
• Determine:
a) The blank diameter in mm needed to manufacture this cooking pot
b) The drawing ratio.
c) The required shearing force in kN needed to cut the blank.

Solved Examples
• Example 2 :
A blanking operation is to be performed on 2 mm thick cold-rolled steel.
The blank is circular with diameter = 75 mm.
• Determine the blanking force required if the shear strength of the steel =
325 MPa.
• Calculate the blanking force if the blank is a square with side length of 75
mm.
