Lasswell's Communication Model Explained

Lasswell's model of communication, developed in 1948, outlines a linear framework consisting of five elements: Who says What, in Which channel, to Whom, with What effect? It serves to analyze communication in a multicultural society and has applications in public relations and mass communication. While the model is simple and effective in understanding message impact, it has limitations regarding feedback and noise in the communication process.

Developed in 1948, Lasswell’s model of communication describes who is saying

something, which channel is used to convey the messages, who the message is aimed
at and what effect the message has. This is the classic sender receiver model as it is
still often used during communication sciences and public relations. Lasswell’s model
suggests the message flow in a multicultural society with multiple audiences. The flow
of message is through various channels.

This model consists of 5 elements:

Who says What, in Which channel, to Whom, with What effect?

According to Lasswell there are three functions for communication:

1. Surveillance of the environment
2. Correlation of components of society
3. Cultural transmission between generation

Now we present some exampled wherein Lasswell’s model is used:

In this example, a weather report is being broadcasted to the public through television.
The broadcaster, in this case Kuya Kim, is updating the audience about the coming
storm surge that threatens Luzon through television. Through its medium, the news is
able to spread nationwide, resulting to the public being warned and prepared for the
coming storm surge.

Similar to the first example, a news report is being disseminated. However in this case,
the medium for the report is a news article. CNN NEWS – A water leak from Japan’s
tsunami-crippled nuclear power station resulted in about 100 times the permitted level of
radioactive material flowing into the sea, operator Tokyo Electric Power Co said on
Saturday.

Who – TEPC Operator

What – Radioactive material flowing into sea
Channel – CNN NEWS (Television medium)
Whom – Public
Effect – Alert the people of japan from the radiation

In this example, the communicators are the authors, the receivers are the readers, and
the channel is the book. This is an example of Laswell’s model as the communication
between the authors and the audience is linear. The authors communicate their
message through the use of a book while the readers just absorb and process the
information they have read without having to give any feedback.

This model of communication has several advantages and disadvantages

Advantage of lasswell model:
• It is Easy and Simple; as it is a linear form of communication
• It suits for almost all types of communication; as this model is meant for public
relations and mass communication
• The concept of effect; as it takes into mind the impact of the message to the
receiver

Disadvantage of lasswell model:
As lasswell’s model is a linear model of communication, there is a lack of importance
when it comes to feedback and noise. This model only gives importance to its 5
elements; Who says What, in Which channel, to Whom, with What effect?

That is all and thank you
