CHAPTER 2: UNDERSTANDING THE WEATHER
TASKSHEET
Q1. Match the instrument with the weather element it measures. (NCERT Q1)
Instrument used Element of the Weather
(1) Hygrometer (a) Precipitation
(2) Anemometer (b) Atmospheric pressure
(3) Barometer (c) Wind direction and speed
(4) Thermometer (d) Humidity
(5) Rain gauge (e) Temperature
Q2. “Weather is an element of the earth’s atmosphere”. Justify the given statement.
Ans. Weather is a state of the Earth’s atmosphere at a particular time and place. The layer closest to the
surface of the Earth is called the ‘troposphere’, and that is where all land-based plants and animals live
and breathe. It is also where almost all weather phenomena occur.
Q3. Categorise and differentiate between the different elements of weather on the basis of the
following:
● Meaning
● Instrument of measurement
● Impact of its measurement

might come from.
● A greater wind speed will cause
the soil to dry faster.

● Museums also monitor
humidity as they need to
maintain a dry environment to
preserve their exhibit.
Q3. If the humidity in Delhi is at 52% while in Kochi it is 84%, in which of the two places are wet clothes
likely to dry faster? And where are you likely to sweat more, assuming the temperature is the same in
both places?(NCERT)
Ans. The clothes will dry faster in Delhi as clothes dry faster in areas with low humidity.
We are more likely to sweat in Kochi as sweat cools by evaporating moisture from our body. In areas like
Kochi, where humidity is high, the moisture evaporates slowly.
Q4. Read the given riddle and answer the following questions:
I measure the air, the wind, and the sky,
Without a person, I never ask why.
I watch the clouds, the rain, and the heat,
In fields, skies, and roads, my data’s a treat.
In every forecast, you’ll find me near,
What am I called? Can you make it clear?
a. What is the answer to the above riddle?
Ans. Automated weather stations
b. What are the advantages of using it?
Ans. The advantages are as follows:
● It does not need any human intervention and can operate on its own.
● Such stations are widely used in fields like agriculture, aviation, navigation, environmental
monitoring, and so on, providing accurate and timely weather information.
Q5. “Meteorologists study the data and use science to try and predict the weather.” Based on the given
statement, explain the reasons behind predicting the weather.
Ans. Accurate predictions help us to be ready for climatic events. They also enable local governments to
mobilise resources and prepare for any disasters. For example, if stormy weather is expected at sea,
fishermen are warned about venturing out in their boats, or an entire coastal area might have to be
evacuated if a cyclone is expected.
Q6. (AFL) Jyotsna is deciding what clothes to pack for her school trip to Mumbai in June. She looks at the
weather forecast, which predicts 29°C and 84% humidity. What would be your advice to her? (NCERT Q3)
Q7. Read the given case study and answer the following questions:
Arjun was excited to visit his uncle, a soldier stationed at Khardung La in Ladakh—one of the highest
motorable roads in the world, over 5600 metres above sea level. As their vehicle climbed higher into the
mountains, Arjun started feeling tired and a little dizzy and asked for help from the driver. In turn, the
driver stopped often to let everyone rest.
a. Why do you think the driver was often stopping?
b. What are the steps that you can take when visiting a place situated at a high altitude?
c. How do you think high-altitude areas could impact the lifestyle of people?
