STORY 6: THE CLIMB INTO DARKNESS

(Extended Version)
Minh pushed the heavy lighthouse door open
with all his strength. It creaked loudly, as if
protesting after years of silence, before finally
giving way. He slipped inside and slammed it
shut behind him. The sound of the storm was
still there, but now it was muffled, distant, as if
the thick stone walls were fighting the wind for
him.
Inside, the lighthouse was cold and completely
dark.
Water dripped steadily from the ceiling, echoing
through the empty space. The air smelled of
damp stone, old metal, and salt. Minh stood still
for a moment, his heart racing, listening to the
unfamiliar silence. Without the light, the
lighthouse felt strange—almost lifeless.
Taking a shaky breath, Minh turned on his small
flashlight. A narrow beam of light cut through
the darkness, revealing the spiral staircase
twisting upward like a giant snake. The steps
were narrow and worn smooth from years of
use. A rusted railing ran along the wall, cold
under Minh’s fingers.
He began to climb.
Each step echoed loudly in the hollow tower.
The higher he climbed, the harder it became to
breathe. His legs were already tired from
running through the storm, and now they burned
with every movement. The flashlight shook in
his hand, casting moving shadows that danced
along the walls.
Fear slowly crept into Minh’s mind.
The darkness felt heavy, pressing down on him.
Every sound—the drip of water, the whistle of
wind through cracks, the distant thunder—made
his heart jump. For a moment, Minh imagined
he was completely alone in the world, trapped
inside the lighthouse with the storm raging
outside.
Halfway up, he stopped to catch his breath. His
hands trembled, and his arms ached. Doubt
whispered to him again. What if I can’t fix it?
What if I break it even more?
Minh closed his eyes.
He remembered the old lighthouse keeper
standing beside him, carefully cleaning the glass
panels, showing him how the lamp worked. He
remembered how serious the man had been
when he spoke about responsibility. Those
memories steadied Minh’s shaking hands.
He opened his eyes and continued climbing.
At last, Minh reached the top. The lamp room
was small, surrounded by thick glass windows
streaked with rain. The storm rattled them
violently, making the whole room tremble. In
the center stood the great lamp—dark, broken,
and silent.
Minh stepped closer and examined it carefully.
A wire had come loose, and part of the lamp
was damaged. His heart sank. Fixing it would
not be easy.
Lightning flashed outside, filling the room with
sudden white light. For a second, Minh saw the
wild sea below and felt how high he really was.
Fear rushed through him, but he forced himself
to focus.
With careful, shaking fingers, Minh began to
work.
He remembered every lesson, every warning.
Slowly, he adjusted the wire, cleaned the glass,
and replaced the damaged part. The storm shook
the lighthouse again and again, but Minh did not
stop. Sweat mixed with rain on his face, and his
hands ached, but he kept going.
Finally, everything was ready.
Minh stepped back, his heart pounding loudly in
his chest. All that remained was to turn the
switch. His hand hovered in the air, trembling
with fear and hope.
If this failed, the sea would remain dark.
Taking one final deep breath, Minh reached
forward.
