Given
The road is to be constructed is urban interstate highway
- ESAL = 2x106
- Damage = one week for water to drain/ the pavement will be exposed
for 30% of the time
- AC surfacing Mr = 450,000 lb/m2
- Granular base Mr = 31,000 lb/m2
- Granular sub base Mr = 13,500 lb/m2
- Subgrade CBR = 6

A flexible pavement is designed using TRL-

Example 3
A flexible pavement is to be designed using the AASHTO and ERA design procedure from the
design period of 15 years. Two alternative surfacing ( double surface treatment and asphalt
concrete) were suggested to be considered for economical analysis. The traffic volume and axle
load survey were made in 2015 on both directions and the results are shown in tables below.
The subgrade soil CBR values are as given in table below. The pavement structure will be well
drained and 1.0 could be taken as the coefficient for both layers. The material specifications are
as given in table. Assuming that the construction takes place in three years, and the traffic
grows at annual rate of 4.5%, design a flexible pavement structure using AASHTO and ERA
design procedure and for both asphalt concrete and surface treatment surfacing. Assume
change in SI= 2.5, R = 95% and standard deviation is 0.4.
Note i. You have to select the heavier lane for your design ESAL.
ii. Resilient modulus of subgrade soil = 1500*CBR
iii. The layer coefficient of the surface treatment can be assumed to be zero.
