Crisis Communication Assignment
Select an instance of bad crisis communication by an organization
(company/educational institution) like the ones discussed in class.
Task 1: Understand the crisis and briefly summarize it, underlining the specific
mistakes and oversights committed by the organization
Task 2: Conduct a SWOT analysis to understand the organization’s operations,
history, and vulnerabilities
Task 3: Construct a crisis management team
a) Identify key stakeholders (such as employees, customers, media, regulatory
agencies, etc appropriate for your specific case.
b) Create a list of employees (designation) who should be a part of the crisis
communication team of your chosen organization and identify the primary
spokespersons (research the crisis management structures of organizations to
understand how these teams are formed)
c) Identify channels of communication (internal memos, social media, press
releases, etc., frequency of their release, portals that messages would be posted
on/published in) during the crisis and protocols for each
Task 4:
Draft alternate messages and holding statements emphasizing transparency,
empathy, and consistency that you think should have been more appropriate for
the organization (Any two documents out of the following: a) Holding statement
on day 0, b) An update after preliminary investigation, c) An apology to major
stakeholders d) Plan of redressal)
Task 5:
Submit the recording of a press briefing that a member of the crisis team may
have conducted once all the facts of the crisis were known. Please note the
following:
a) Simulate a formal setting, close-up of the spokesperson wearing formals
b) The spokesperson delivers a brief (2-4min) stating the specifics of the
case. Followed by two questions from the media
c) The camera need not pan over to the journalists, and the questions can be
asked as a voice-over to the video
d) The spokesperson thanks everyone, concludes the briefing, and exits
