Mastery Roadmap (5-Year Plan) for Project Planning & Control

YEAR 1 – Skill Consolidation & Identity Building

Goal: Strengthen foundation + build signature style.

• Advanced Primavera mastery

• Build templates (WBS, progress measurement, risk register, reporting pack)

• Learn Power BI dashboards (schedule health, productivity, risk heatmap, forecasting)

Output: You become “The person who delivers clarity”.

Mindset: Don’t just report. Interpret.

YEAR 2 – Integration Phase (Schedule–Cost–Risk)

Goal: Master integrated project controls.

• Learn cost control fundamentals

• Master risk management (qualitative & quantitative)

• Build integrated controls model (schedule–cost–risk linkage)

Output: Planner → Project Controls Analyst.

Mindset: The schedule is a prediction tool.

YEAR 3 – Lead Role Positioning

Goal: Move into lead/acting lead roles.

• Take roles: Lead Planner, Project Controls Lead, Interface Coordinator

• Learn forensic delay analysis (TIA, Window, As-Built vs As-Planned)

• Learn contract & claim concepts (entitlement, notices, EOT)

Output: “The person who prevents and defends the project.”

Mindset: Leadership starts with visibility.

YEAR 4 – Strategic Capability Building

Goal: Think like a Project Manager.

• Understand procurement criticality, constructability, constraints mapping

• Cost vs schedule optimization, cashflow control


• Learn project strategy (FEED → EPC → Commissioning)

Output: You become the “brain” of the project.

Mindset: You are shaping project direction.

YEAR 5 – Mastery Transition (Intuition Level)

Goal: Transition to Mastery.

• Lead mega projects or take roles: PC Manager, Planning Manager, Senior PC Engineer

• Predict patterns and risks intuitively

• Mentor juniors

• Develop your own signature method

Output: “The Master Practitioner.”

Mindset: Intuition is earned.

Optional High-Value Skills:

Power BI Advanced, Python, SQL, Excel VBA, negotiation, leadership communication.
