Mechanical Design: Structural Mechanics Problems

The document outlines a series of problems related to structural mechanics for second-year mechanical engineering students at Cairo University. It includes tasks such as determining displacements and deflections for various structural configurations under applied loads. Each problem references specific figures to illustrate the scenarios and requires the application of principles of flexural rigidity and structural analysis.

Second Year Mechanical Castilian's Second Theorem Sheet 2

1. Determine v and 9 at the center of the span due to the applied loads shown in Fig.1. El is constant.

2. For the planar frames shown in Fig. 2, determine v, h and 8 for point A due to the applied loading. El
is constant (Note: v is the vertical and h is the horizontal displacements).

3. For the planar frames shown in Fig. 3, determine v, h and 6 for point A due to the applied loading. El
is constant.

4. A U-shape member of constant El has the dimension shown in Fig. 4. Determine the deflection of
the applied forces away from each other due flexure.

5. In order to install a split ring used as a retainer on a machine shaft, it is necessary to open a gap of
by applying forces P as shown in the· Fig. 5. If El of the cross section of the ring is constant,
determine the required magnitude of force P. Consider only flexural effects.

6. A bar having a circular cross section is bent into a semicircle and is built in at one end as shown in
Fig. 6. Determine the deflection of the free end caused by the application of force P acting normal to
the plane of the semicircle. Neglect the contribution of shear deformation.

7. A solid bar of circular cross section is bent into the shape of a right angle and is built in at one end,
as shown in Fig. 7. Determine the three translations in the x, y and z directions, and the rotation cf
the free end due to the applied force F._ Constants E, G, I and J for the bar are given.

8. A structure lies in a vertical plane and in the form of three quadrants of a thin ring one end is
clamped, the other is loaded by a vertical force P as shown in Fig. 8. Determine the horizontal
displacement of point A. Consider only bending energy.

9. A structure is in the form of one quadrant of a thin circular ring of radius R, one end is clamped (see
Fig. 9). If the other end is subject to a couple Mo, determine the angular rotation as well as the
vertical and horizontal components of displacement of point A.

10. Member OAB of Fig. 1O lies in one plane and has the shape of two quadrants of a circle. Assuming
that the strain energy due to shear and axial forces can be neglected, determine the vertical
deflection and the change in slope at point B.

11. Prove that the reaction at the roller support for the shown curved member of flexural rigidity El is
equal to 20/(3TT - 8). Then determine the displacement of the roller support (see Fig. 11 ).

i 2. Member ABC has a uniform circular cross-section with radius r that is small compared with R as
shown in Fig. 12. Determine the support reactions at A and C, and the horizontal component of the
displacement of point C.

13. A uniformly loaded beam fixed at both ends has the reactions shown in Fig. 13. Using a simply
supported beam with a · unit load in the middle as a virtual system, determine the maximum
deflection for the real beam.
