2. A student is doing an experiment to study whether rock salt or table salt dissolves faster in
water. The students measure the time needed for all salt to dissolve in a beaker of water without
stirring.

Rock salt Table salt

(a) State two controlled variables, an independent variable and a dependent variable in this
experiment by choosing from (A) to (E) on the answer sheet. (4 marks)
Variables (A) to (E) :

(A) Type of salt (D) Size of beaker

(B) Amount of salt (E) Temperature of water
(C) Time taken for all salt to dissolve in water

(b) To make it fair, the same volume of water should be used to dissolve the salt in both set-
ups. The student uses a measuring cylinder to measure the volume of water. Based on the
readings shown in the picture below, what is the volume of water used? (1 mark)

Optional
Amy wants to know if water or alcohol evaporates faster under room conditions. She uses the
same type of dropper to add a drop of alcohol and a drop of water onto a piece of 5cm x 5cm
Brand A paper separately. Then, she measures the time taken for the water and alcohol to
completely dry up. To speed up the experiment, she places a fan near the set-up using water.
Her set-ups are shown below:
