Q1). Tell us about a time you received negative feedback.

What did you learn from the

experience?
A). As a deck cadet, I received constructive feedback from the Chief Officer that I tended to
focus too rigidly on following procedures without fully grasping the broader operational
context. Reflecting on this, I recognized that, like shore-based operations, shipboard safety
and efficiency rely on understanding interdependencies—how small actions can affect the
entire system. In response, I sought mentoring, enhanced my situational awareness, and
learned to interpret trends rather than reacting solely to individual data points.

Q2). Tell me about a time when you had to explain a complex concept to someone who
was not familiar with the topic. How did you ensure they understood?
A). When my relieving cadet joined the ship for the first time, I was responsible for handing
over watchkeeping duties. Being new, I guided him through a typical watch step by step—
what to check, why it matters, and the potential consequences of missing something. I
demonstrated the tasks in real time, then had him perform them under my observation. I
encouraged questions and asked him to repeat key points to confirm his understanding. By
the next watch, he was more confident and able to carry out his duties correctly. This
experience reinforced that clear, simple explanations combined with verification of
understanding make complex tasks easier to learn. Eg : Sounding and Ullaging.

Q3). Give me an example of a time when you had to deliver bad news to a colleague or
client. How did you approach the conversation?
A). During a cargo watch, I noticed a small cargo line leak and immediately informed the
Chief Officer, explaining the issue and potential risks. Prompt action was taken, and the leak
was contained before any cargo went overboard. This experience reinforced the importance
of clear, timely, and solution-focused communication when reporting issues.

Q4). Describe a time when you received constructive criticism. How did you respond,
and what changes did you make?
A). During a cargo watch while filling up log entires, my Chief Officer noted that I was
completing tasks correctly but too slowly. I asked for guidance and focused on improving
efficiency while maintaining safety. As a result, I became faster and more confident in
handling multiple responsibilities.

Q5). Tell me about a time when you had to manage a heavy workload. How did you
stay organized and ensure deadlines were met?
A). During a long voyage, I managed navigation duties, routine maintenance checks, and Log
keeping and assisting senior officers at the same time. I stayed organized by using a task list,
prioritizing urgent items, and coordinating with the seniors. As a result, all tasks were
completed on time and watch handovers were smooth and safe.
