Geometry Lesson Notes

A concise review of fundamental geometry concepts.

1. Basics of Geometry
• Point: A location with no size or shape.
• Line: Extends infinitely in two directions.
• Line Segment: Part of a line with two endpoints.
• Ray: Part of a line with one endpoint.
• Plane: A flat surface extending infinitely in all directions.

2. Angles
• Acute: Less than 90°
• Right: Exactly 90°
• Obtuse: Between 90° and 180°
• Straight: 180°
• Reflex: Greater than 180°
Angle Relationships: Complementary (sum to 90°), Supplementary (sum to 180°), Vertical
angles (equal).

3. Triangles
• By Sides: Scalene (no equal sides), Isosceles (two equal sides), Equilateral (three equal
sides).
• By Angles: Acute, Right, Obtuse.
• Triangle Sum Theorem: Interior angles add up to 180°.

4. Quadrilaterals
• Square: Four equal sides and angles.
• Rectangle: Opposite sides equal, all angles 90°.
• Parallelogram: Opposite sides parallel and equal.
• Rhombus: All sides equal; opposite angles equal.
• Trapezoid: At least one pair of parallel sides.
5. Circles
• Radius: Distance from center to a point on the circle.
• Diameter: Twice the radius.
• Circumference: C = 2πr
• Area: A = πr²

6. Coordinate Geometry
• Distance Formula: d = √[(x■ − x■)² + (y■ − y■)²]
• Midpoint Formula: M = ((x■ + x■)/2, (y■ + y■)/2)
• Slope: m = (y■ − y■)/(x■ − x■)

7. Area and Perimeter (Common Shapes)

• Rectangle: A = lw, P = 2(l + w)
• Triangle: A = ½bh
• Square: A = s², P = 4s
• Circle: A = πr², C = 2πr

Study Tips
• Draw diagrams to visualize problems.
• Memorize key formulas and theorems.
• Check units and angle measures carefully.
• Practice with varied problem types.
