Even now I don’t quite know how I agreed to join, was it the greed for the money that

accompanied the performance I was told about? Was it the lust for fame perhaps? I doubt for I
have never wanted neither fame nor publicity, I always imagined living somewhere full of
nature, away from the concrete jungle that is the city, and deep down, I always felt like the
college degree I was going to get had I stayed back home would not have sufficed me with the
life I yearned for. Perhaps the money would come, but alas I would be sentenced to a life in an
office, a nine to five with minimum wage.
I was not made for this.
Upon telling my parents of my intentions I was greeted with one of two choices: stay in the city,
go to college, keep financial aid going, perhaps get a car later on down the road, or walking out
of the door and having considered myself no longer of the family.
I remember mother’s exact words “keep in the comfort zone, the risk shall give you nothing”
Part of me wanted to believe her. I wanted to believe that this world had something in store for
me, but I could not. She stated of a comfort zone, but it was not my comfort zone but theirs.
They did not fathom the fact that our modern world had chosen to leave behind the minds like
mine, the people who would rather contradict what is seen as rational and to step forth into the
unknown, braving every crevice of the arts the ones before us had to offer. They did not
understand that to me all the money in the world meant nothing if I was to lose myself in this
miserable shell of a world once filled with great minds, honed and sharpened to the extreme.
So there I was, two suitcases in hand, the last of my money having been burned on the cab drive
here, standing face to face with what was to be my home.
