Understanding Sugar Addiction and Global Warming
Understanding Sugar Addiction and Global Warming
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer to each question.
“It seems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cause, I find my way
back to sugar”, says scientist Richard Johnson. About one-third of adults worldwide have
high blood pressure, and up to 347 million have diabetes . Why? “Sugar, we believe, is one of
the culprits, if not the major culprit,” says Johnson. Our bodies are designed to survive on
very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very
efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food.
However, most people today have more than enough, so the very thing that once saved us
may now be killing us.
So what is the solution? It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s
world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals to after-dinner desserts, our
foods are increasingly filled with it. Some manufacturers even use sugar to replace taste in
foods that are advertised as ‘low in fat. But there are those who are fighting back against
sugar. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier options like fruit. Other
schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building facilities like walking tracks so that
students and others in the community can exercise.

Carbon dioxide is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists agree that
the burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal causes greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide
to escape into the air and act like a warm blanket over the earth.
There are already some changes happening because of global warming. Sea level is rising,
climate is changing, and some animals are moving to new homes because their natural
habitat is disappearing. If the warming gets worse, as scientists expect, there may be some
kinds of plants and animals that become extinct. Heat waves and droughts will increase,
leading to wildfires, and some areas may become too dry for farming. Warmer ocean
temperatures lead to more big storms which damage homes and cause floods. Sea levels
may rise so much that people have to move away from the coasts.
All humans contribute to global warming by burning fossil fuels when they drive a car, fly in an
airplane, heat or cool their houses and cut down trees to clear land. One way to reduce
greenhouse gases is to reduce deforestation, the cutting down of trees. Trees soak up
carbon dioxide from the air, so having lots of trees around is good for the atmosphere. We
can also plant more trees. The best way to help slow down global warming and is to put less
carbon into the air by using less fossil fuel - something that is easy to say, but hard to do! But
by driving less, turning down the heat and air conditioning, and using more solar, wind and
hydroelectric power, we can all reduce greenhouse gases and help fight global warming and
climate cha1nge.
The issue of global warming has been widely discussed at the highest governmental and
scientific levels recently. The issue is indeed very serious. It threatens with a lot of negative
consequences for nature and humans. We can only hope that the future generation will be
wiser and more inventive than us to successfully mitigate the effects of global warming. Our
children's and grandchildren's well-being is largely dependent on how well they understand
the problem and the ways to tackle it.

answer A, B, C or D to each question.
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing”, and it implies that a thief is trying to lure
people into giving away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait in the
form of great online deals or services. For example, phishers might use fake emails and false
websites to con people into revealing credit card numbers, account usernames, and
passwords. They imitate well-known banks, online sellers, and credit card companies.
Successful phishers may convince as many as five percent of the people they contact to
respond and give away their personal financial information.
Is this really a big problem? Actually, tricking five percent of the online population is huge!
Currently, more than 350 million people have access to the Internet, and seventy-five percent
of those Internet users live in the wealthiest countries on Earth. It has been estimated that
phishers send more than three billion scam messages each lion scam messages each year.
Even by tricking only five percent of the people, phishers can make a lot of money.
Since there is so much money to make through this kind of scam, it has caught the interest of
more than just small-time crooks. Recently, police tracked down members of an organized
phishing group in Eastern Europe, who had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from
people online. The group created official-looking email messages requesting people to
update their personal information at an international bank’s website. However, the link to the
bank in the message actually sent people to the phishers’ fake website. To make matters
worse, further investigation revealed that this group had connections to a major crime gang
in Russia.
How can innocent people protect themselves? Above all, they have to learn to recognize
emails that have been sent by phishers. Always be wary of any email with urgent requests for
personal financial information. Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but fake
statements in their emails so that people will reply right away. Also, messages from phishers
will not address recipients by name because they don’t know who the recipients are yet. On
the other hand, valid messages from your bank companies you normally deal with will
typically include your personal name.
Questions

● fake emails
● passwords
● people
● phishers
Câu hỏi 1.5: (1 Điểm) According to paragraph 3, why are only 5% of online users tricked
a big problem?
● Because these 5% of internet users are the wealthiest people among online population.
● Because the personal information these people are tricked is financial.
● Because the number of online population is myriad and three fourths of them live in rich
nation.
● Because the number of scam messages sent to these users is more than three billion.

answer to each question.
Early in the eighteenth century, sailors from the British navy came across this exotic sauce
on voyages to Malaysia and Singapore and brought samples of it back to England on return
voyages. English chefs tried to recreate the sauce but were unable to do so exactly because
key ingredients were unknown or unavailable in England; chefs ended up substituting
ingredients such as mushrooms and walnuts in an attempt to recreate the special tastes of
the original Asian sauce. Variations of this sauce became quite the rage in eighteenth-
century England, appearing in a number of recipe books and featured as an exotic addition to
menus from the period.
The English version did not contain tomatoes, and it was not until the end of the eighteenth
century that tomatoes became a main ingredient, in the ketchup of the newly created United
States. It is quite notable that tomatoes were added to the sauce in that tomatoes had
previously been considered quite dangerous to health. The tomato had been cultivated by
the Aztecs, who had called it tomato; however, early botanists had recognized that the
tomato was a member of the Solanaceae family, which does include a number of poisonous
plants. The leaves of the tomato plant are poisonous, though of course the fruit is not.
[A] Thomas Jefferson, who cultivated the tomato in his gardens at Monticello and served
dishes containing tomatoes at lavish feasts, often receives credit for changing the reputation
of the tomato. [B] Soon after Jefferson had introduced the tomato to American society,
recipes combining the newly fashionable tomato with the equally fashionable and exotic
sauce known as ketchup began to appear. [C] By the middle of the nineteenth century, both
the tomato and tomato ketchup were staples of the American kitchen. [D]
Tomato ketchup, popular though it was, was quite time-consuming to prepare. In 1876, the
first mass-produced tomato ketchup, a product of German-American Henry Heinz, went on
sale and achieved immediate success. From tomato ketchup, Heinz branched out into a
number of other products, including various sauces, pickles, and relishes.

Week 7
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer to each question.
Although it sounds like a boat, an earthship is a house. However, unlike regular houses,
earthships are constructed from garbage and are built using only ten percent of the energy
needed to build a typical house. Moreover, after they are built, earthships use only ten
percent of the energy required to heat, light, and cool a regular home. Although earthships
sound unique, they can actually be built to look just like any other house.
One of the big benefits of earthships is that they are made from recycled materials. The main
construction material of an earthship is used tires that are filled with dirt. The dirt-filled tires
are then laid flat and stacked like bricks. Because the tires are round, there is lots of extra
space between the columns of tires. These spaces are filled with used cardboard. The tires
and cardboard form the outside walls of an earthship. The inside walls between rooms in the
earthship do not need to be as strong as the outside walls; therefore, they are made with old
cans, bottles, and cement that are eventually covered and painted to look just like walls in a
typical home.
Another benefit of an earthship is that it saves energy and natural resources. For example, an
earthship uses less water. Rain water, which is collected on the roof, is used for drinking and
bathing. Furthermore, earthships need much less energy for heating and cooling because
they are built into the ground, which keeps the temperature inside the house from getting too
hot or too cold. In the long run, this helps earthship owners lower their utility bills. As well, one
wall of an earthship usually faces south. Therefore, solar heat helps to warm the house, and
solar panels built on the roof generate electricity to run appliances in the house.
All of these features make earthships very environmentally friendly. That's one of the reasons
they have become popular throughout the world. Earthships have been built in Bolivia,
Australia, Mexico, Japan, Canada, England, Scotland, and all over the US. Maybe in the near
future, an earthship will be landing near you!

Week 8
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer A, B, C or D to each question.
Jonathan Smith, who is studying for a BA in Business, chose to study via a distance learning
course when already in full-time employment. ‘I’d studied History, Politics and Economics at
school but going to university wasn’t even a consideration for me,’ he explains. ‘My friends
were at home, I didn’t want to be burdened with debt and I wanted to get straight into a
career.’ Jonathan completed a Business and Administration Apprenticeship with the local
council. While working as a medical administrator, he studied for a diploma and after 12
months had valuable workplace experience. ‘I’d done so well at work that they kept me on.
But after six months getting settled into my new role, I was financially stable and ready to
progress my career with a degree. I didn’t want to give up what I’d achieved to go to
university, so distance learning was an appealing choice.’
Obviously, one of the downsides to a distance-learning course is that students miss out on
the experience of attending university, which means missing out on traditional lectures.
‘Reading feedback and instructions from a screen isn’t quite the same as talking to someone
face-to-face,’ Jamie says. ‘It’s also a lot of work to do on your own. I don’t have a close circle
of friends going through the same thing, so I can’t really ask my peers for help and advice.
However, I’ve found the online student forums helpful and the firm I’ve been working for have
offered advice and guidance when I’ve needed it.’ ‘I haven’t met as many new people as I
would have, had I moved away,’ says Jamie. ‘But I have met new people through work
instead. It’s just a different type of experience, which is just as rewarding and ultimately, in
my opinion, makes me more employable.’
For anyone considering a distance learning course, there are several other factors to be
considered, perhaps most importantly, motivation. ‘Distance learning isn’t an easy option,’
says Dr Philip Hallam, Chief Executive Officer of a distance and online learning provider. ‘It’s
going to be a substantial commitment, not only financially but also on your time. We need to
make sure that people have really thought it through and understand why they want a
degree. You will need to dig deep occasionally.’

Week 9
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer to each question.
Functionality and Form: In the contemporary world, the intersection of functionality and form
is a hallmark of architectural excellence. Modern architects strive not only to create
aesthetically pleasing structures but also to ensure they serve their intended purposes
efficiently. The evolution of materials and construction techniques has allowed for innovative
designs that push the boundaries of what is possible.
Urban Planning and Social Impact: Architecture extends beyond individual structures to
influence the design of entire cities. Urban planning, a critical component of architectural
practice, shapes the way people interact with their environments. Thoughtful planning can
foster community engagement, promote sustainable living, and contribute to a high quality of
life. Conversely, poorly planned urban spaces may lead to social isolation, traffic congestion,
and environmental degradation.
Cultural Identity and Globalization: One of the intriguing aspects of architecture is its ability
to embody cultural identity. Indigenous architectural styles tell the stories of a community's
history, beliefs, and traditions. However, in an era of globalization, the influx of Western
architectural trends into diverse cultures raises questions about the preservation of local
identities. Striking a balance between embracing innovation and safeguarding cultural
heritage becomes a crucial consideration for architects and communities alike.
In essence, architecture is a multifaceted discipline that goes beyond the creation of physical
structures. It is an art form that weaves together history, functionality, cultural expression,
and environmental responsibility. As architects navigate the complexities of the modern
world, their designs have the power to shape not only the spaces we inhabit but also the
societies we build. In understanding the profound influence of architecture, we gain insight
into the ways in which our built environment reflects and shapes the human experience.

Week 10
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer to each question.
The committee has already lodged an appeal to the local authority against construction of
the solar farm. The councillors are due to meet on 13th March to vote whether or not plans
will go ahead. Local residents are invited to attend. Our objections will be presented before
the board, and a representative from the solar firm SunGen will put forward the case for the
development.
Residents are encouraged to voice their objections to the development. These must address
the aspects of the scheme that violate the current planning policy. However, you are
welcome to make your objections personal, by stating how the plans will affect you as a user
of the recreation ground. Some of the most common objections are listed below.
The extensive views of the village and recreation ground across the open country will be
blocked by the panels and high fencing. Furthermore, once the site has been built upon, it
may be considered brownfield, thus an acceptable site for housing or industrial development.
It does not, therefore, comply with the local policy which states that developments must not
have adverse effects on the appearance or character of the landscape.
The recreation ground has recently undergone major improvements including a perimeter
running track, new playground equipment and seating. [A] It is heavily used by families, sports
teams and dog walkers, and is regularly used for village events. [B] Cricketers are worried
that they may become liable for damage to solar panels. [C] If teams are forced to relocate,
this would adversely affect the character of the village, and may jeopardise participation in
the children's teams. [D] This goes against the National Planning Policy Framework which
requires developments to promote high quality public space and encourage the active and
continual use of public areas.
There has been no assessment of the extent to which noise from inverters and cooling fans
will affect local residents.
As the ground beneath the solar panels will be surfaced, there will be more additional run-off
of rainwater. The recreation ground already has problems with drainage, and these may be
exacerbated by this development. A formal flood risk assessment must be submitted.
The lighting and security systems have not been outlined, it is not clear how the area will be
made safe for children.

Week 11
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer to each question.
Some people argue that graffiti should indeed be recognized as a valid form of art.
Proponents of this view highlight the immense skill and creativity demonstrated by many
graffiti artists. The intricate designs and vibrant colors present in some graffiti pieces show a
level of artistic talent that cannot be easily dismissed. Additionally, graffiti can be seen as a
form of self-expression and a way for artists to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and
perspectives with the public.
Furthermore, proponents argue that graffiti, much like any other art form, has the power to
stimulate thought and challenge societal norms. Some graffiti serves as a form of social or
political commentary, tackling issues such as inequality, injustice, or environmental concerns.
In this way, graffiti can act as a visual dialogue that engages the community and encourages
critical thinking. [A]
On the other hand, there are those who view graffiti primarily as vandalism and not as a valid
art form. Opponents often point to the illegal nature of many graffiti activities, with artists
trespassing on private property and defacing public spaces without permission. [B]
Additionally, critics argue that not all graffiti exhibits the level of skill and intent associated
with traditional art. Some graffiti may be simple images drawn hastily without a clear
message. In such cases, the argument against considering graffiti as art is based on the
perceived lack of artistic merit and thoughtful expression. [C]
However, it’s important to be aware that the line between art and vandalism is not always
clear-cut. Some graffiti pieces are in between the two, making it challenging to categorize
them definitively. Moreover, the viewpoint of graffiti as art or vandalism often depends on
individual perspectives and cultural contexts. [D]
In recent years, street art festivals and authorized mural projects have emerged as a way to
accept and celebrate graffiti in certain contexts. Cities around the world have considered
street art as a means of revitalizing urban spaces, encouraging a sense of community, and
promoting tourism. Artists who were once considered vandals are now being allowed to
create large-scale, legal murals that contribute positively to the visual landscape of the city.

Week 12
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer A, B, C or D to each question.
But do the statistics support our negative world view or is the world actually improving? Let's
take global population first. It's around 7 billion now, in line with figures predicted by the
experts in UN in 1958. By the year 2100, they predict it will be around 11 billion. But did you
know that 11 billion is probably as high as that number will get? The rate of increase will slow
down in the second half of this century thanks to falling birth rates today.
Falling birth rates? Yes, that's right. In the last two centuries, improvements in technology and
health meant fewer children died young, fuelling rapid population growth. These large
families produced even more children who survived into adulthood and had their own
children. [B] But with the wider availability of contraception in the 1960s, the global average
number of babies per woman has declined from six babies per woman to as low as two.
The biggest factor in child mortality is poverty. And while it's still true that only 20 per cent of
the world takes about 74 per cent of the world's income, 60 per cent of the world now falls
into a middle-income group, with 11.6 per cent - the smallest amount of people in history -
still living in conditions of extreme poverty. If the majority of the world's people have money,
international aid could realistically achieve the UN target of eradicating poverty by 2030. As
poverty goes down, life expectancy goes up, birth rates go down because parents can expect
their existing children to survive, and the global population stabilises.
As for news stories that make us think the world is an increasingly violent place, there is
cause for some optimism too. Between the end of World War II and 1990, there were 30 wars
that killed more than 100,000 people. [C] However, terrorism has shot up in the last few
years and, since World War I, wars have killed many more civilians than soldiers. Even for
civilians, though, the statistics are not all bad. Although deaths are nine times more likely to
be a result of violent crime than political conflict, the global murder rate fell slightly, from 6
per 100,000 people in 2000 to about 5.3 in 2015.
Of course, none of this means the world is perfect, and whether you personally are affected
by war and poverty is often down to the lottery of where you're born. [D] Also, we still face
huge problems of our own making, particularly environmental ones like global warming, and
wealth and natural resources need to be distributed more fairly. But not all the news is bad
news, whatever the TV and newspapers might say.

Week 13
Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer A, B, C or D to each question.
When penicillin was introduced during World War II, it was truly a "miracle drug." Until that
time, anyone who was cut or wounded stood a great risk of infection. Once penicillin became
available, the situation changed. Wounded soldiers, children with ear infections, and many
others began to benefit from the ability to block the growth of bacteria.
While human beings may have won that particular battle against bacteria, the war is far from
over. The reason is that in any bacterial population, there are bound to be a few bacteria that,
for one reason or another, are not affected by a particular antibiotic. For example, they may
have a slightly differently shaped enzyme that builds cell walls, so that penicillin will not fit
onto that particular shape of the enzyme. These bacteria will not be affected by that
particular drug.
For that small group, the antibiotic is a real godsend. It doesn't affect them, but it does wipe
out all of their competition. They are thus free to multiply, and, overtime, all of the bacteria
will have whatever properties that made those individuals resistant.
Traditionally, medical scientists have dealt with this phenomenon by developing a large
number of antibiotics, each of which intervenes in the bacterial life cycle in a slightly different
way. Consequently, if you happen to have a bacterium that is resistant to one antibiotic,
probably it will succumb to the action of another. You may, in fact, have had the experience
of going to a doctor with an infection, being given an antibiotic, and then finding that it didn't
work. In all likelihood, all your doctor had to do then was prescribe a different antibiotic and
everything was fine.
The problem is that as time has passed, more and more bacteria have become resistant to
antibiotics. In fact, currently, there is one strain of bacteria-Staphylococcus-that is resistant
to every commercially available antibiotic except one, and in 1996, a bacterium with lowered
resistance to that last antibiotic appeared in Japan.
By the early 1990s, this gap was recognized and highlighted in several national news
magazines. More companies returned to develop new kinds of antibiotics, and currently, a
number are undergoing clinical trials. By early in the twenty-first century, some of these new
drugs will start to come on the market, and the problem will be "solved," at least for the
moment.
Additional research will focus on the processes by which cells repair the constant damage to
DNA, but the computer design of new drugs, the development of new antibiotics, and
techniques to combat bacteria should remain a top priority.
Questions
Câu hỏi 1.1: (1 Điểm) How do antibiotics treat infections?
● They interfere with the reproductive cycle of bacteria
● They construct cell walls to resist bacteria
● They inject enzymes that explode in affected cells
● They increase the mitosis of healthy cell

passage?
● The "miracle drug" penicillin
● Drug-resistant bacteria
● Staphylococcus infections

antibiotics?
● The antibiotic eliminates competing bacteria, allowing resistant bacteria to reproduce
● The resistant bacteria compete with the antibiotic, and the bacteria become stronger
● The competition helps the resistant bacteria to multiply by reproducing with the resistant
type
● The properties of the antibiotic are acquired by the bacteria, making it resistant to the
competition

answer to each question.
Socially, aging can lead to shifts in relationships and social dynamics. Retirement often marks
a significant transition, providing individuals with an opportunity to explore new interests or
dedicate time to longstanding passions. Maintaining a strong social support network
becomes crucial for emotional well-being, helping to combat feelings of isolation or
loneliness that can sometimes accompany aging.
One of the prevailing societal challenges associated with aging is the need for
comprehensive healthcare and support systems. As the global population ages, there is a
growing demand for age-friendly infrastructure, healthcare services, and policies that
address the unique needs of older individuals. This includes accessible transportation, age-
appropriate housing, and healthcare facilities equipped to manage the complex health issues
that may arise in later years.
Despite the challenges, aging can be viewed as a period of continued growth and
development. Many older individuals contribute significantly to their communities through
volunteer work, mentorship, and the sharing of accumulated knowledge. The concept of
"successful aging" emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, adapting to
change, and finding meaning and fulfillment in the later stages of life.

Directions: You will read one passage, followed by ten questions about it. Choose the best
answer to each question.
We think we are safe, but that may not be true! A new kind of attack is being used by
dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card numbers from innocent web surfers. This new
kind of attack is called "phishing." Phishing sounds the same as the word "fishing," and it
implies that a thief is trying to lure people into giving away valuable information. Like real
fishermen, phishers use bait in the form of great online deals or services. For example,
phishers might use fake emails and false websites to con people into revealing credit card
numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate well-known banks, online sellers,
and credit card companies. Successful phishers may convince as many as five percent of the
people they contact to respond and give away their personal financial information.
Is this really a big problem? Actually, tricking five percent of the online population is huge!
Currently, more than 350 million people have access to the Internet, and seventy-five percent
of those Internet users live in the wealthiest countries on Earth. It has been estimated that
phishers send more than three billion scam messages each year. Even by tricking only five
percent of the people, phishers can make a lot of money.
Since there is so much money to make through this kind of scam, it has caught the interest of
more than just small-time crooks. Recently, police tracked down members of an organized
phishing group in Eastern Europe, who had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from
people online. The group created official-looking email messages requesting people to
update their personal information at an international bank's website. However, the link to the
bank in the message actually sent people to the phishers' fake website. To make matters
worse, further investigation revealed that this group had connections to a major crime gang
in Russia.
How can innocent people protect themselves? Above all, they have to learn to recognize
email that has been sent by a phisher. Always be wary of any email with urgent requests for
personal financial information. Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but fake,
statements in their emails so that people will reply right away.
Also, messages from phishers will not address recipients by name because they really don't
know who the recipients are yet. On the other hand, valid messages from your bank or other
companies you normally deal with will typically include your name.
Questions
Câu hỏi 1.1: (1 Điểm) What is the main idea of the passage?
