Detailed Notes on Crane Components
• Boom
The long arm of the crane, which can be telescopic or fixed.
Provides reach and height to lift and move loads..
• Jib (Extension Arm)
A smaller extension at the end of the boom.
Increases horizontal reach beyond the boom..
• Hook
Attached to the hoist rope or chain.
Connects the load to the crane via slings or lifting attachments..
• Hoist
Mechanism with rope or chain used to lift and lower loads vertically..
• Wire Rope or Load Chain
Strong steel cable or chain that bears the load during lifting; passes over pulleys or drums..
• Drum
Cylindrical part around which the hoist rope winds.
Helps in winding/unwinding the rope during lifting/lowering..
• Sheaves (Pulleys)
Grooved wheels for guiding wire ropes.
Reduce friction and change direction of the wire rope..
• Counterweights
Heavy weights located at the back of the crane.
Balance the crane and prevent tipping..
• Rotex Gear (Slewing Unit)
Gear system that allows the crane’s superstructure to rotate 360°..
• Outriggers / Stabilizers
Extendable legs on mobile cranes.
Provide stability and prevent tipping during operation..
• Cabin / Operator's Cabin
Enclosed space where the operator sits.
Houses the crane controls and provides visibility..
• Controls / Control Panel
Joysticks, levers, or buttons that control hoisting, swinging, and boom extension..
• Crane Base / Chassis
The main lower frame of the crane.
Supports the crane and houses engine and drive systems..
• Turntable
Rotating connection between upper and lower parts.
Allows the upper structure to swing horizontally..
• Trolley (In Overhead/Bridge Cranes)
Moves along the bridge and carries the hoist..
• Bridge (In Bridge Cranes)
Horizontal structure that spans the crane runway.
Supports the trolley and hoist..
• Runway Rails (For Overhead Cranes)
Steel rails for bridge crane movement..
• Limit Switches
Safety devices that prevent over-travel of the hoist or boom..
• Load Moment Indicator (LMI)
Monitoring device that alerts operator of overload or unsafe conditions..
• Engine / Motor
Electric, diesel, or hydraulic power source for crane movements..
