FAQs

What is GPTZero?

GPTZero is the leading AI detector for checking whether a document was written by a large language model such
as ChatGPT. GPTZero detects AI on sentence, paragraph, and document level. Our model was trained on a large,
diverse corpus of human-written and AI-generated text with support for English, Spanish, French, German, and
other languages. To date, GPTZero has served over 10 million users around the world, and works with over 100
organizations in education, hiring, publishing, legal, and more.

When should I use GPTZero?

Our users have seen the use of AI-generated text proliferate into education, certification, hiring and recruitment,
social writing platforms, disinformation, and beyond. We've created GPTZero as a tool to highlight the possible use
of AI in writing text. In particular, we focus on classifying AI use in prose. Overall, our classifier is intended to be
used to flag situations in which a conversation can be started (for example, between educators and students) to
drive further inquiry and spread awareness of the risks of using AI in written work.

Does GPTZero only detect ChatGPT outputs?

No, GPTZero works robustly across a range of AI language models, including but not limited to ChatGPT, GPT-5,
GPT-4, GPT-3, Gemini, Claude, and AI services based on those models.

What are the limitations of the classifier?

The nature of AI-generated content is changing constantly. As such, these results should not be used to punish
students. We recommend educators to use our behind-the-scene Writing Reports as part of a holistic assessment
of student work. There always exist edge cases with both instances where AI is classified as human, and human is
classified as AI. Instead, we recommend educators take approaches that give students the opportunity to demon-
strate their understanding in a controlled environment and craft assignments that cannot be solved with AI. Our
classifier is not trained to identify AI-generated text after it has been heavily modified after generation (although
we estimate this is a minority of the uses for AI-generation at the moment). Currently, our classifier can sometimes
flag other machine-generated or highly procedural text as AI-generated, and as such, should be used on more
descriptive portions of text.

I'm an educator who has found AI-generated text by my students. What do I do?

Firstly, at GPTZero, we don't believe that any AI detector is perfect. There always exist edge cases with both in-
stances where AI is classified as human, and human is classified as AI. Nonetheless, we recommend that educators
can do the following when they get a positive detection: Ask students to demonstrate their understanding in a
controlled environment, whether that is through an in-person assessment, or through an editor that can track their
edit history (for instance, using our Writing Reports through Google Docs). Check out our list of several recommen-
dations on types of assignments that are difficult to solve with AI.

Ask the student if they can produce artifacts of their writing process, whether it is drafts, revision histories, or
brainstorming notes. For example, if the editor they used to write the text has an edit history (such as Google Docs),
and it was typed out with several edits over a reasonable period of time, it is likely the student work is authentic.
You can use GPTZero's Writing Reports to replay the student's writing process, and view signals that indicate the
authenticity of the work.
See if there is a history of AI-generated text in the student's work. We recommend looking for a long-term pattern
of AI use, as opposed to a single instance, in order to determine whether the student is using AI.

Common questions

Powered by AI

GPTZero helps educators by detecting possible AI-generated text in student submissions, flagging situations where further inquiry and dialogue are necessary to assess authenticity. It provides Writing Reports that offer insight into the writing process, helping to determine if a student authored the work over time. This is significant because it addresses the concerns of academic integrity and the increasing use of AI tools in education, promoting awareness and discussion about the responsible use of such technologies .

GPTZero could be misused for punitive purposes if administrators rely solely on its outputs without considering the context, especially because it might falsely classify texts. To mitigate these risks, educators should use GPTZero as a component in a broader assessment strategy by verifying with other methodologies and promoting transparent discussions about AI use with students to emphasize learning rather than punishment .

Future developments could include improved algorithms that better adapt to changing AI generation methods, reduced false positives and negatives, and enhanced capabilities to detect subtly modified AI text. Integration with broader educational platforms for seamless workflow tracking and advanced analytics could further enhance usability. These innovations would help maintain high academic integrity standards as AI continues to evolve .

GPTZero positions itself as a tool to start conversations about AI's role in writing, advocating for awareness and inquiry rather than punishment. It aims to highlight situations where AI might have been used, encouraging stakeholders to reflect on its implications and risks, particularly in sectors where creativity and authenticity are paramount, like education and publishing .

GPTZero suggests that educators should ask students to prove their understanding through controlled environments, like in-person assessments or tracked editing activities. They also encourage assignments that cannot easily be solved by AI. It's important to review the student's writing process, looking for drafts or edit histories, and examine any long-term patterns of AI use instead of isolated cases .

AI detection tools like GPTZero can be integrated into educational assessment frameworks by using them as initial screening tools to identify potential AI-written content. They should complement traditional assessment methods, including in-person evaluations and review of student writing processes, such as draft submissions and tracked editing in digital documents. Emphasizing the development of AI-resistant assignments and involving students in discussions about AI's role in academia can further strengthen this integration .

GPTZero is concerned about AI-generated text in education and publishing because it challenges the integrity and originality that are crucial in these fields. In education, it risks undermining learning and assessment, while in publishing, it threatens content authenticity and the value of human creativity. Highlighting AI use is vital for ensuring transparency and upholding ethical standards .

Educators should consider the potential for false positives and negatives in AI detection, the importance of using detailed Writing Reports to evaluate student work over time, and the need to ensure that assessments are AI-resistant. They should also be prepared to facilitate discussions with students about their process and the role of AI in their work, rather than relying solely on the tool for final judgments .

GPTZero distinguishes itself by supporting a wide range of AI models beyond just ChatGPT, including GPT-5, GPT-4, and others. Its focus is on detecting AI use at various writing levels, offering a tool for discussing the ethical and practical consequences of AI-generated content rather than strictly punitive measures. This broad applicability and focus on dialogue position it uniquely among AI detection tools .

Limitations of GPTZero include the changing nature of AI-generated content, which can make detection challenging. The classifier sometimes misidentifies human text as AI and vice versa. It also struggles with heavily modified AI-generated texts and may flag procedural text as AI-generated. These limitations highlight the need for caution and a holistic approach when using such tools for educational assessments .
