SOCM 3200: BUSINESS ETHICS - TEAM PROJECT

SOCM 3200: BUSINESS ETHICS

COURSE TEAM PROJECT – UNDERSTANDING BUSINESS ETHICS

In this team-based project, students will create a play for one or more ethical dilemmas
regarding a Pakistani business situation. The subject can either be a real large or medium-scale
organization that already exists (e.g., Qarshi, DevSinc, or Candyland) facing a real problem
(highly preferred) or a hypothetical Pakistani organizational setting (less preferred). If using a
real organization as the context, students may wish to research as much as possible through
primary or secondary data the situation they wish to portray.

The purpose of the project is to apply your understandings of business ethics from the
classroom into a real-world situation and, hence, strengthen your analytical ethics skills. You
are required to demonstrate through the play one or more principles that have been studied in
class. The end result should be a play that is insightful and helps the audience understand the
lens(es) through which ethical perspectives shed light on a business dilemma.

Presentation Modalities

• The play presentations would be held during the last two classes of the semester,
inshaAllah.
• Students have the creative license to depict the situation in whatever way they deem
suitable.
• The play is to be 10 minutes long (maximum). Plays would be stopped after this time.
• Rehearsal is going to be critical to performing well during the play. Students are
expected to memorize their roles and enact them as best as possible. It is expected that
students spend about two weeks (if not more) rehearsing so that they are well prepared
during the play.
• Teams may present in the play
o One principle/perspective in depth
o More than one principle in one dilemma setting
o More than one principle in more than one dilemma setting (e.g., two to three
mini-plays)
Note: More than one principle or setting does not mean better scores. See criteria of
evaluation below.
• The company (and if it is not obvious, what the company does) has to be named once in
the play (in whatever way that is appropriate, a subtle reference may suffice).
• It should also be obvious what the roles/designation of characters in the play are (again
in whatever way that is appropriate).

SOCM 3200: BUSINESS ETHICS - TEAM PROJECT

• All students in a team are required to participate in the play.

• Plays may be in English or Urdu or a combination of both languages.
• The script of the play should be submitted to the instructor via Google Classroom before
the start of the play session (regardless of the order of presentation). These need to
have names and roll numbers. If scripts are hand-written, they need to be scanned for
submission.
• The order of presentation would be decided randomly on presentation day. All students
are required to attend all the presentations.
• Guests may be present in the audience and may be involved in evaluating.

Assessment

The assessment of the project play will be based on the following:

• Correct application of ethical principle(s), concept(s), value(s), and/or perspective(s).

• Quality of the insights and importance, complexity of the situation(s) and its analyses
• Practicality/plausibility of resolution(s) of ethical dilemma(s) for the business
• Creativity and expression (including well-performed and within time)

Other Points

Feel free to discuss ideas with the instructor during the semester. When doing so, all team
members are encouraged to come to discuss.

There may be a question(s) on the final exam regarding the project. Hence, it is important to
play an active part in your team during all stages of the project.

Try to have fun! Be creative! You may add humor if you wish. The play should be interesting to
the audience.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Humor can engage the audience, relieve tension, and enhance memorability if used appropriately. It should support the ethical narrative rather than undermine it, carefully balancing entertainment with seriousness. Jokes or light-hearted elements must respect the values and sensitivity of the issues portrayed .

Students have the creative license to depict situations in varied styles, integrate humor, and combine languages. The play should engage the audience, incorporating elements that maintain interest while effectively communicating ethical principles. They should consider rehearsals to perfect delivery and expression .

Presenting multiple principles or dilemmas may lead to time constraints, reduced depth of analysis, and potential confusion in the audience if not executed clearly. Students must balance depth and breadth, ensuring each principle is applied correctly and the narrative remains coherent .

The presence of guests implies a need for professionalism and polish, as these external evaluators may bring diverse perspectives and expectations. Students must ensure clarity, relevance, and broad appeal in their presentations, thus potentially influencing grading beyond the course instructor’s criteria .

Discussing ideas with the instructor provides valuable feedback and guidance, clarifying any misunderstandings and enhancing the depth of ethical analysis. It ensures the project aligns with course objectives and leverages the instructor's expertise to refine creative and ethical aspects of the play .

Students can subtly integrate role and designation cues through dialogue, actions, or specific references to business operations. For example, using industry-specific jargon or demonstrating leadership behaviors can communicate positions naturally, enhancing the play’s realism and audience understanding .

Teams should consider dilemmas that allow for the application of multiple ethical principles and present complexity for thorough analysis. The dilemma should be plausible, relevant to a Pakistani business context, and facilitate insightful exploration and resolution to engage the audience effectively .

Students must depict an ethical dilemma using principles studied in class, demonstrate roles/designations of characters, and name the company involved. Additionally, they should creatively present within a 10-minute time limit, ensuring accuracy in applying ethical principles and presenting insights. The script should be submitted beforehand, and all team members must participate .

To achieve a favorable assessment, students should apply ethical principles correctly, provide quality insights, analyze complex situations, and propose practical resolutions to the ethical dilemmas. Creativity, expression, and adherence to the time limit are also critical. Ensuring relevance and plausibility in the depicted scenarios will also enhance assessment outcomes .

Rehearsals are crucial as they ensure students memorize and accurately enact their roles, contributing to the play's overall quality. These rehearsals help improve timing, delivery, and understanding of the ethical issues portrayed, enhancing both performance and audience engagement .
