Theory –
The BH Curve is generated by applying an increasing magnetic field to a material and measuring how the
material’s magnetic properties change. This curve also captures the behaviour of the material when the
magnetic field is reduced, revealing hysteresis, which describes the lag between changes in the magnetic
field and changes in the material's magnetization.
A magnetic hysteresis loop is a graphical curve that shows how a ferromagnetic material responds when
the magnetizing field applied to it is increased, reversed, and then cycled repeatedly. It plots the
relationship between magnetic flux density (B) on the vertical axis and magnetizing force (H) on
the horizontal axis. What makes this loop important is that it reveals that the material does not
instantly follow changes in the applied field, its magnetization lags behind. This lagging behaviour
is known as magnetic hysteresis. The loop helps us understand how a material becomes
magnetized, how much magnetism it retains after the external field is removed, and how strong a
reverse field must be applied to completely demagnetize it. Engineers and physicists rely on this
curve to study the magnetic properties of cores used in transformers, motors, generators, and
memory devices.
