Pete Nowlen
Artistic Director, Concert Band
Well here we are.
My final concert as Artistic Director of the San Francisco Pride Band’s Concert Band.
I will miss the people, the spirit, the music-making, and the dedication to mission that
make this organization so special (but not Tuesday rush hour traffic through the City)!
This Band is here because of the extraordinary individual effort and sacrifice of scores of
people — many of whom you see on stage today. Since then-President Julie Williamson
did my official on-boarding 13 years ago, we have a new name, a new rehearsal venue,
a new performing venue, and lots of new people. We’ve seen the world change (again)
because of a pandemic. We’ve had at least six highly-dedicated board presidents
supported by dozens of board members and, over these dozen years, we’ve seen those
faces become younger, offering fresh perspectives, ideas, and solutions. As a new Artistic
Director is selected, exciting (and sometimes scary) changes will follow. But the Band’s
story will continue to be shaped by the volunteers — in many cases, your friends and
family members — who sit on stage today and those who follow them.
For an organization to sustain, it must constantly renew — as this one has for the nearly
50 years since it was born in protest. The piece we premiere today, American Epic,
celebrates the Band’s history in protest, the perseverance and renewal that have sustained
it, and the City that nurtures it. I’m proud to present it as the latest installment of our
BIPOC Commissioning Program on my ultimate concert with the Band. The rest of today’s
program brings together some old favorites and some new discoveries to continue to
celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of our region.
It has truly been a privilege to get to do this job for a time. It has brought fascinating
people, fascinating challenges, and fascinating rhythms (in both music and life).
I look forward to seeing the Band’s next steps as my old friends bring on a new partner to
continue the exploration.
