Modified Proctor Test Overview

The Modified Proctor Test determines the dry density-moisture relationship for compaction of materials in embankments and subgrades, using higher compaction energy than the standard test. It involves a cylindrical mold and a specific compaction procedure to create a Proctor curve for analysis. The Standard Proctor Test, on the other hand, aims to find the maximum dry density and optimal moisture of soil using a different mold and compaction method.

Modified Proctor Test

What is it for:

It is used to determine the dry density - moisture relationship of compaction of the

materials to be used in embankments and in layers of subgrades, and as a reference for control of
quality of compaction on site.
Standard: ASTM D-1557 or UNE 103-501-94

Procedure:

The modified Proctor test is similar to the standard one but modifies both the capacity of the.
mold like the energy of compaction.

This test requires a higher compaction energy than the Normal Proctor test and recreates,
therefore, more powerful and vigorous compaction methods.

In this case, a cylindrical mold of 2.320 cm is used.3of capacity and a mace of

4.535 kg dropped from a height of 457 mm.
Instead of 3 layers, 5 layers of material are compacted, delivering 25 blows for each layer.
Likewise, various measurements of humidity and density inside the mold are taken with
different degrees of moisture to plot the Proctor curve and thus give for
Proctor test completed.

Description of necessary equipment:

Collar
Mold
Base
Fun
Separator

Interpretation of results:

The Proctor test report must provide the maximum dry density as well as the moisture content.
optimize and, more importantly, the moisture-dry density curve with the values of all the
tested points. As complementary information, you must provide the specific data of the
molde, característcas de la maza, numero de capas, y golpes por capa

Standard Proctor Test

ASTM D-698 or UNE 103-500-94

What is it for:

The standard Proctor test aims to determine the maximum dry density of a soil and the
optimal humidity needed to reach this density.

Procedure:

To do this, a cylindrical mold with a capacity of 1 liter is used, which is filled with 3 layers of
material properly compacted using a standardized 2.5 kg rammer that
let it fall freely from a height of 305 mm.
The material to be tested has previously been dried and sieved through a 20 mm UNE sieve or the
corresponding to ASTM and subsequently moistened with different moisture levels,
one for each necessary sample.
For the compaction of each layer of material, 26 blows of the mallet are used.
distributed uniformly over the surface of the land.
The three layers should have approximately the same height of earth.
Once the material is compacted, the mold is filled and the density and moisture are measured.
a sample taken from the center of the mold.
The process is repeated several times with different moisture contents.
The Normal Proctor compaction test can be considered complete when it
obtain 5 or 6 points that define a curve relating dry density with the
humidity.

Description of necessary equipment:

Interpretation of results:

Sieve No. 4
Compaction cylinder.
spatula
Electronic scale.
Water container.
Piston or hammer.
Suitable containers for moisture determination.
Oven with adjustable temperature.

The result sheet of any standard proctor test must clearly indicate the density.
maximum dry and optimal moisture, as well as showing the compaction curve. As already
we have discussed, this curve allows us to determine in a graphic and simple way, what is the
dry density that can be achieved for a given value of humidity.
