Class observation protocol
Class observation is a practice used both in initial training and
permanent teaching staff as well as in research on teaching contexts and
learning. It involves systematically and objectively recording what happens in the classroom to
to be able to study it and interpret it later.
The observation of school practices - such as a classroom situation - must
having an intentional, specific, and systematic character, therefore it requires a
preliminary planning that allows us to collect information. Observing means to look at reality
in which we find ourselves, not to judge it, but to try to understand it, analyze it and
to reach some conclusions that contribute to 'learning to teach'.
Therefore, observation allows us to grasp the situations of everyday classroom life.
Integrating the gaze and the listening to understand situated practices.
In order to implement the focus of the gaze and at the same time, leave a record

Examples of some aspects that can make up a protocol or observation guide:
a. Description of the classroom:
Dimensions (extent and shape), distribution and functionality. Spaces used (more or
less used), type of furniture (fixed, mobile); classroom educational materials and their use,
distribución, accesibilidad, quién lo ordena, controla; medios audiovisuales e informáticos y

b. Organization, resources, programs, and activities of the classroom.
c. Strategies and resources that the teacher uses in the classroom.
d. Description of the characteristics of the class group

According to what is recorded in this 'registration sheet', we could assume some categories of
observations provided for in the protocol, such as:
a- Teaching strategies proposed by the teacher.
Type of learning activities.
Ways of teacher intervention.
b- Grouping of the students.
