Measurement
Topics:
- Time - Mass
- Perimeter and Area - Capacity
- Volume - The Metric System
1. Vocabulary:
Hour Minute Second Elapsed Time
Degree Celsius Melting Point Boiling Point
Litre Millilitre Milligram Gram
Kilogram Tonne Length Width
Depth
2. Skills:
A. Converting
Mass Capacity Volume (continued)
g to kg (x1000) mL to L (x1000) km3 to hm3 (÷10)
kg to g (÷1000) L to mL (÷1000) hm3 to dam3 (÷10)
mg to g (x1000) Volume dam3 to m3 (÷10)
g to mg (÷1000) mm3 to cm3 (x10) m3 to dm3 (÷10)
kg to t (x1000) cm3 to dm3 (x10) dm3 to cm3 (÷10)
t to kg (÷1000) dm3 to m3 (x10) cm3 to mm3 (÷10)
m3 to dam3 (x10)
dam3 to hm3 (x10)
hm3 to km3 (x10)
B. Comparing:
Ex.
15 L = 15000 mL
1500mm > 15 cm
10.5 dm < 10 m
C. Choosing the appropriate unit:
Ex.
Tonnes to measure an elephant’s weight; kilograms to weigh a human; mm to measure the length of
a grain of sand
D. Calculating Perimeter and Area of shapes
Area = length x width = units2
Width Perimeter = (length x2) + (width x2)
Length
E. Relating distance to time
Ex. A car travels 20 m in 1 second. How far will it go in 1 minute?
1 minute = 60s
20 x 60 = 1200 m
The car will go 1200 m.
Ex. Jane has to walk 3 kilometres to school. She walks at a rate of 2 m/s. How long will it take to get
there? Show your answer in minutes.
3 km = 3000 m
3000 ÷ 2 = 1500
1500 ÷ 60 = 25 (Use long division to get this answer…follow the purple link below if you need a
reminder on how to do this)
It will take her 25 minutes to get to school.

F. Reading an analog clock
Students should be able to tell time on an analog clock
G. Calculating Volume
Ex:
Volume = length x width x height
Expressed as units3
