Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics Tutorial

The document outlines a tutorial on classical mechanics, focusing on Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations. It includes problems related to constructing Lagrangians, determining generalized momentum, writing equations of motion, and finding Hamiltonians for various scenarios. The tutorial also covers the conservation of angular momentum in a central force field and provides specific Lagrangian forms for analysis.

Tutorial-2
1. Consider a mass m ball moving in the x-y plane as a result of gravitational force.
The vertical motion of the ball can be denoted as,

xy = c

where c is a constant. For this case,

(a) Construct the Lagrangian.

(b) Determine the generalized momentum.
(c) Write Lagrange’s equation of motion.
(d) Find Hamilton’s principle function.
(e) Write the Hamiltonian in terms of generalized momentum and generalized co-
ordinates.
(f) Solve Hamilton’s equation of motion.

2. Find the Hamiltonian corresponding to the following Lagrangian,

(a) L = 12 m ṙ2 + r2 θ̇2 − V (r, θ)
(b) L = 21 mẋ2 + mẋẏ

3. A bead of mass m slides along a frictionless straight rod of negligible mass. If the
rod is uniformly rotating in a force free space at a constant angular speed ω in a
horizontal plane, set up the lagrangian and equation of motion, also find the radial
position (r) of the bead as a function of time, assuming that r = R, ṙ = v at t = 0.

4. Using the Lagrangian equation of motion show that the angular momentum of a
particle moving under the influence of central field of force (which only depends on
its distance from the origin i.e. F⃗ = − rK2 r̂) is conserved.

5. A lagrangian is given in the form, L = 12 αq̇ 2 − 12 βq 2 , where α and β are constants.

(a) Obtain the equation of motion.

(b) Find the Hamiltonian of the system.
