Tutorial Sheet 3
Q.1 Consider the space curve given by the following equation:
r(t) = (1 + sin t) i + (t2 + cos t) j + (t3 − πt2 ) k, t ̸= 0 and r(0) = 0 i + 0 j + 0 k.
Find all the points t at which r(t) is smooth. Further, find the angle between the tangent and
acceleration vectors at t = π.
Q.2 Solve the following initial value problem:
d2 r
= −(i + j + k)
dt2
with initial conditions:
dr
r(0) = ai + bj + ck and = 0,
dt t=0
where a, b, c ∈ R are constants.
Q.3 A particle travelling in a straight line is located at the point (1, −1, 2) and has speed 2 at
time t = 0. The particle moves toward the point (3, 0, 3) with constant acceleration 2i + j + k.
Find its position vector r(t) at time t.
Q.4 Find the arc lengths of the following curves:
2π
(i) r(t) = cos(3t)i + sin(3t)j + 6t k, 0≤t≤ 3
,
(ii) r(t) = cos( 5t )i + sin( 5t )j + 2t
5
k, 0 ≤ t ≤ 10π,
(iii) r(t) = cos( 2t3 )i − sin( 2t3 )j − 4t
3
k, −3π ≤ t ≤ 0.
Is the answer the same for each curve? If so, why?
Q.5 At what point does the curve y = ex have its maximum curvature? What happens to the
curvature as x → ∞?
Q.6 For the curve r(t) = ti + t2 j, find the coordinates of the center of the osculating circle at the
point t0 .
Q.7 Find T, N, B, κ and τ for r(t) = (sin t − t cos t)i + (cos t + t sin t)j − 4k, t > 0. Further, find
the equations of osculating, normal and rectifying planes at t0 > 0.
