STA101: Introduction to Statistics
Assignment-3
1. A fitness company wants to investigate how the number of hours of weekly exercise affects the
resting heart rate of adults. It is known that more exercise tends to lower resting heart rate, but the
exact relationship needs to be quantified. A study is conducted, and the following data are collected:
SL# Weekly Exercise Hours Resting Heart Rate
(beats/min)
1 1+A 84 − A²
2 2.8 80
3 2 78
4 3.3 70
5 5+A 72 + A
6 11 − A 65 − A
7 7.1 44
8 4 60
9 6.3 55
10 10 − A 50 − A
11 9.2 48
12 4.1 73
13 5.4 68
14 7.8 52
15 2.3 79
Here, A is the average of the first and last digit of your student ID, rounded to the closest
integer.
a. Identify the dependent and independent variables in this study. [1 mark]
b. Draw an appropriate plot to show the relationship between weekly exercise and resting heart
rate. What do you observe about the relationship between the two variables? [3 marks]
c. Calculate ∑𝑥, ∑𝑦, ∑𝑥 2 , ∑𝑦 2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∑𝑥𝑦. [2.5 marks]
d. Calculate the Pearson correlation coefficient and interpret it. [3 marks]
e. Fit a regression model for predicting resting heart rate based on weekly exercise. Interpret
regression parameters in the context of this study. [5 marks]
f. Calculate the residual for a person who exercises 3 hours per week. [1 mark]
g. Predict the expected resting heart rate for someone who exercises 6 hours per week. [1 mark]
h. Determine the coefficient of determination and explain what it tells you about the relationship.
[2 marks]
i. Draw an estimated regression line on the same scatter plot drawn in (b) [4 marks]
j. Suppose the company also finds that the Pearson correlation coefficient between resting heart
rate and BMI is 0.73. If they fit another regression model to predict heart rate based on BMI,
determine which regression model (exercise-based or BMI-based) is better for predicting resting
heart rate? [2.5 marks]
