DIVISION OF
WORK
CONCEPT
The division of labor is an economic concept that establishes
that dividing the production process into different stages allows
workers specialize in specific tasks, with each
task performed by a person or group of people for
separate
If workers can focus on a small aspect
from production, this increases overall efficiency, always and
when a sufficient amount has been produced. It is applied more
frequency to mass production systems and is one of the
basic principles of organizing an assembly line.
How does it arise?
The concept of division of labor was popularized in 1776 by the
Scottish economist Adam Smith in his book The Wealth of Nations
nations.
He used the famous example of a pin factory for this. Adam
Smith observed how efficiency increased tremendously.
production because the workers were divided and were given
different roles were assigned.
He saw this division of labor as key to economic growth.
by providing a cheaper and more efficient means of producing goods.
Problems of the division of labor
Smith acknowledged the potential problems of this development. He pointed out
to force people to perform simple and repetitive tasks
it led to an ignorant and dissatisfied workforce.
For this reason, he formulated the revolutionary belief that the
governments had the obligation to provide education to the
workers.
Sociological sense
• The French scholar Durkheim was the first to use the phrase division.
of work in a sociological sense in its discussion about the
social evolution.
• Instead of seeing the division of labor as a result of the desire to
material abundanceDurkheimhe stated that the specialization arose
of the changes in the social structure, caused by a supposed
natural increase in the size and density of the population and a
increase in competition for survival.
What does it consist of?
A very basic example of the division of labor could be seen in the
food gathering. In the early societies, men were
the hunters and the women and the children were preparing food and gathering
the berries.
It was a very simple division of labor to allow for the best use of the
different skill sets.
Currently, there is an even greater division of labor in the
food production. Farmers buy the seeds,
fertilizers and tractors from different companies. They only concentrate
in one aspect of food production.
