Objectives:
At the end of the discussion, the students are expected to
1. Understand and compare the fundamental differences
between Creationism and Evolutionism, focusing on
their core beliefs, key figures, and supporting evidence;
and
2. To analyze how these perspectives address the origins
and development of life, including the specific roles of
Adam and Eve in Creationism and the significance of
Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" in Evolutionism.
Motivation
What is CREATIONISM?
What is EVOLUTIONISM?
Introduction
Creationism and evolutionism are two contrasting perspectives on the
origin and development of life on Earth.
Creationism is the belief that life, the Earth, and the universe were
created by a divine being or god, typically as described in religious
texts such as the Bible. Creationists believe that life forms were created
in their current forms and have not changed significantly over time.
Evolutionism, on the other hand, is the scientific theory that species
evolve over time through natural processes such as natural selection
and genetic variation. According to this view, life on Earth has
developed over millions of years from simpler organisms to more
complex forms, with species adapting to their environments.
The TRUTH is...
Evolution is the cause of
development of mankind
Creationism is disproved by
several theories & actualities
within scientific realm.

In creationism, the story of Adam and Eve is
central to understanding the origins of
humanity, often seen as the literal account
of how the first humans came into existence.
Here's how Adam and Eve relate to
creationism.
Divine Creation: Creationism holds that
God created Adam and Eve directly, as
opposed to the theory of evolution, which
suggests humans evolved from earlier
species over millions of years.
According to the Bible, in the Book of
Genesis, God created Adam from the dust
of the earth and Eve from one of Adam's
ribs, signifying a direct, intentional creation
by God.
- Creationism often links the story of Adam and Eve to key
Christian doctrines, such as the belief in original sin and the need
for salvation through Jesus Christ.
- The belief in a literal Adam and Eve supports the idea that
humanity’s fall from grace was a historical event that has
theological consequences for all humans.
In creationist thought, Adam and Eve are viewed not just as
symbolic figures but as real, historical individuals whose actions
had profound effects on all of creation.
What are the 7 days of Creations?
God’s creation of the earth is found in Genesis chapters 1
and 2 and consists of the following seven days of creation:
Days of creation list:
Day 1: Light
Day 2: Atmosphere / Firmament
Day 3: Dry ground & plants
Day 4: Sun, moon & stars
Day 5: Birds & sea creatures
Day 6: Land animals & humans
Day 7: The Sabbath of rest
Before creation...
"In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth. The earth was
without form, and void; and darkness
was on the face of the deep. And the
Spirit of God was hovering over the
face of the waters" (Genesis 1:1-2).
Day 1: LIGHT
Let there be light
“Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and
there was light. And God saw the light,
that it was good; and God divided the
light from the darkness. God called the
light Day, and the darkness He called
Night. So the evening and the morning
were the first day.”
(Genesis 1:3-5).
Day 2: FIRMAMENT
“Then God said, ‘Let there be a firmament in
the midst of the waters, and let it divide the
waters from the waters.’ Thus God made the
firmament, and divided the waters which
were under the firmament from the waters
which were above the firmament; and it was
so. And God called the firmament Heaven.
So the evening and the morning were the
second day.” (Genesis 1:6-8).
Day 3: EARTH, SEA
& VEGETATION
“Then God said, ‘Let the waters under the
heavens be gathered together into one
place, and let the dry land appear’; and it
was so. And God called the dry land Earth,
and the gathering together of the waters
He called Seas. And God saw that it was
good."
(Genesis 1:9-10).
Day 4: SUN, MOON,
& STARS
“Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in
the firmament of the heavens to
divide the day from the night; and let
them be for signs and seasons, and
for days and years; and let them be
for lights in the firmament of the
heavens to give light on the earth’;
and it was so.
Then God made two great lights: the
greater light to rule the day, and the lesser
light to rule the night. He made the stars
also. God set them in the firmament of the
heavens to give light on the earth, and to
rule over the day and over the night, and to
divide the light from the darkness. And God
saw that it was good. So the evening and
the morning were the fourth day.”
(Genesis 1:14-19).
Day 5: BIRDS &
SEA CREATURES
"‘Then God said, ‘Let the waters
abound with an abundance of living
creatures, and let birds fly above the
earth across the face of the firmament
of the heavens.’ So God created great
sea creatures and every living thing
that moves, with which the waters
abounded, according to their kind, and
every winged bird according to its
kind.
And God saw that it was good. And
God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful
and multiply, and fill the waters in the
seas, and let birds multiply on the
earth.’ So the evening and the
morning were the fifth day.”
(Genesis 1:20-23).
Day 6: LAND
ANIMALS & HUMANS
“Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth the
living creature according to its kind: cattle
and creeping thing and beast of the earth,
each according to its kind’; and it was so.
And God made the beast of the earth
according to its kind, cattle according to its
kind, and everything that creeps on the earth
according to its kind. And God saw that it
was good.”
“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image,
according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over
the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the
cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing
that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own
image; in the image of God He created him; male and
female He created them. Then God blessed them, and
God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth
and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea,
over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that
moves on the earth.’”
And God said, ‘See, I have given you every herb that
yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and
every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be
for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every
bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the
earth, in which there is life, I have given every green
herb for food’; and it was so. Then God saw
everything that He had made, and indeed it was very
good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth
day”
(Genesis 1:24-31).
Day 7: THE
SABBATH
“Thus the heavens and the earth,
and all the host of them, were
finished. And on the seventh day
God ended His work which He had
done, and He rested on the
seventh day from all His work
which He had done.
Then God blessed the seventh day
and sanctified it, because in it He
rested from all His work which God
had created and made”
(Genesis 2:1-3).
Pastor Hemway's Take
on Creationism
Literal Interpretation: Believes in the literal interpretation of
the Genesis creation account in the Bible.
Young Earth Creationism: Asserts that the Earth is around
6,000 to 10,000 years old, based on biblical genealogies.
Divine Design: Argues that God created all life forms
intentionally and purposefully.
Opposes Evolution: Rejects the theory of evolution as
incompatible with biblical teachings.
Pastor Hemway's Take
on Creationism
Human Uniqueness: Emphasizes that humans were
created in the image of God, distinct from other
creatures.
Creation in Six Days: Holds that God created the
world in six literal 24-hour days, with a day of rest
on the seventh.
Historical Adam and Eve: Affirms that Adam and
Eve were real historical individuals, the first humans,
and the ancestors of all people.

"Evolutionism" refers to the belief in or support of the
theory of evolution, particularly the idea that
organisms change and develop over time. This is
closely associated with Charles Darwin's theories.
In the 19th century, "evolutionism" was also used to
describe theories of social and cultural evolution,
which attempted to explain the development of human
societies. These theories are now largely considered
outdated.
Mechanisms
Natural Selection: Organisms with traits better
suited for survival are more likely to reproduce
and pass on those traits.
Mutation: Random changes in genes that can
lead to new traits.
Genetic Drift: genetic drift occurs by chance alone,
particularly in small populations.
Gene Flow: Movement of genes between populations
due to migration.
Evidence:
Fossil Record: Shows gradual changes in species over
time.
Comparative Anatomy: Similar structures across
different species (e.g., homologous structures).
Embryology: Similar stages of
development in different species.
Genetics: DNA comparisons
showing similarities among species.
Key Figures: Charles Darwin,
Alfred Russel Wallace.
Homo sapiens is the scientific name for
modern humans. It is the only surviving
species of the genus Homo in the family
Hominidae. Homo sapiens evolved around
300,000 years ago in Africa and are
characterized by advanced cognitive
abilities, such as complex language,
problem-solving, and abstract thinking.
Modern humans are distinguished from
other species in the Homo genus by traits
like a larger brain, more refined tool use,
and the ability to create intricate social
structures and cultures. Homo sapiens
spread across the globe, and today, they
inhabit almost every environment on
Earth.
Homo sapiens, or modern humans, have several key
characteristics that distinguish them from other species:
Large Brain Size: Homo sapiens have a large and complex
brain, particularly the neocortex, which is involved in higher
functions like reasoning, problem-solving, and abstract
thought.
Bipedalism: Homo sapiens walk on two legs, which frees up
the hands for tool use and other activities. This is supported
by a unique skeletal structure.
Homo Sapiens
Advanced Tool Use: Humans use a wide range of tools for
various purposes, from basic stone tools to advanced
technology in modern times.
Complex Language: Homo sapiens are capable of
advanced verbal and written communication, allowing for
complex social structures, culture, and knowledge
transmission.
Social Structure and Culture: Humans live in complex
social groups and develop cultures with traditions, beliefs,
and systems of governance.
Use of Fire: The controlled use of fire for cooking,
warmth, and protection is a significant
characteristic.
Adaptability: Homo sapiens have an
extraordinary ability to adapt to different
environments, from tropical jungles to arctic
regions, through technological innovation and
cultural practices.
Emotional Complexity: Homo sapiens experience a wide
range of emotions and have the capacity for empathy, self-
awareness, and moral reasoning.
Abstract Thinking and Art: Humans engage in creative
expression through art, music, and other forms of abstract
thinking, as well as the ability to think about the future or
hypothetical scenarios.
These characteristics have allowed Homo sapiens to
dominate the planet and develop advanced societies.

DARWINISM'S
Darwinism refers to the theory of evolution
developed by Charles Darwin, primarily presented in
his book On the Origin of Species (1859). It is based
on the idea that species evolve over time through a
process of natural selection. According to Darwin,
individuals in a population vary in their traits, and
some of these variations make them more likely to
survive and reproduce. Over time, favorable traits
become more common in the population, leading to
evolutionary changes.
Charles Darwin's
Origins of Species
"On the Origin of Species" is a
groundbreaking book written by
Charles Darwin and first published in
1859. It introduced the theory of
evolution by natural selection, which
revolutionized the scientific
understanding of life on Earth.
Key Ideas Presented in the Book
1. Variation in Species: Darwin observed that individuals
within a species vary from one another in terms of traits
(such as size, color, or behavior).
2. Struggle for Existence: Organisms compete for limited
resources, and not all individuals survive to reproduce.
3. Natural Selection: The individuals with traits that give
them an advantage in their environment are more likely to
survive and reproduce, passing these advantageous traits
on to future generations.
[Link] with Modification: Over time, this
process leads to the gradual accumulation of
beneficial traits in a population, and over long
periods, new species may emerge from common
ancestors.
[Link] Descent: Darwin suggested that all
life on Earth shares a common ancestor, and
through the process of evolution, different species
have diverged from this common origin.
The book is foundational in biology and
changed how scientists understand the
development of life on Earth. It challenged
the idea of special creation and
introduced a mechanism (natural
selection) for the diversification of life

The primary idea Darwin proposed was that
species evolve over time through a process of
natural selection, where organisms with traits
that are beneficial to their survival and
reproduction are more likely to pass those traits
on to future generations. Over long periods of
time, this process leads to the gradual
accumulation of changes, resulting in the
formation of new species.
Before Darwin, the idea of evolution was not
widely accepted. Darwin's work provided a
scientific explanation for how life changes over
time, replacing earlier notions of creationism
and static species. His ideas are now the
cornerstone of modern evolutionary theory, and
they continue to influence biology, genetics,
and the study of life's history.
SUMMARY
Creationism and evolutionism present two
contrasting views on the origin and development
of life on Earth. Creationism is the belief that life,
the Earth, and the universe were created by a
divine being, as described in religious texts like
the Bible. It emphasizes the direct creation of life
forms, such as the story of Adam and Eve in
Christianity, and often holds to a young Earth
view.
On the other hand, evolutionism is a scientific
theory that posits species evolve over time
through natural processes like natural
selection and genetic variation. According to
this view, life has developed over millions of
years, with species adapting to their
environments. Evidence supporting evolution
includes the fossil record, comparative
anatomy, embryology, and genetics.
Creationism and evolutionism offer differing
explanations for the origin and development of life
CONCLUSIONS
on Earth. While creationism relies on divine
creation as described in religious texts,
evolutionism presents a scientific understanding of
how life changes over time through natural
processes. Both perspectives continue to influence
discussions on the origins of life, with creationism
largely rooted in religious beliefs and evolutionism
supported by scientific evidence.
“The Bible is the authority. God
created everything in six days, and
that’s how it happened.”
