ABSTRACT

The Intelligent Parking Space Management System is an IoT-based automated solution

designed to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and convenience of modern parking
environments. With the increasing number of vehicles in urban areas, traditional parking
systems often struggle with space mismanagement, manual errors, and congestion. To address
these issues, this project integrates ESP32, IR sensors, and an automated gate mechanism to
detect vehicle presence and monitor parking slot occupancy in real time. Each slot uses IR
sensing technology to determine whether a vehicle is present, and this information is instantly
processed by the ESP32 microcontroller. A built-in web server displays updated slot availability
on a mobile or computer browser, enabling users and administrators to easily check the parking
status without requiring any human supervision. The system operates with high accuracy,
minimal delay, and low power consumption, making it an efficient and cost-effective smart
parking solution.

Experimental testing demonstrated that the system performs reliably under normal
environmental conditions, with stable sensor responses and smooth gate automation. The web
interface accurately reflected slot occupancy with less than one second latency, validating the
effectiveness of the ESP32-based IoT approach. The entire system is designed to be modular
and easily scalable, allowing additional slots or advanced features—such as payment
automation, mobile app integration, or camera-based detection—to be incorporated in the
future. Overall, the proposed intelligent parking system enhances user convenience, reduces
human dependency, and optimizes space utilization, thereby providing a practical and
affordable smart parking infrastructure suitable for institutions, malls, offices, and public
parking areas.

Intelligent Parking Space Management System

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKROUND AND MOTIVATION OF THE PROJECT
In recent years, the rapid increase in population, urbanization, and the exponential growth of
vehicle ownership have created major challenges in managing parking spaces efficiently.
Cities, institutions, commercial centers, and public areas often struggle to provide well-
organized parking facilities because traditional systems rely heavily on manual supervision.
This frequently leads to problems such as miscommunication, incorrect slot allocation, traffic
congestion, unnecessary waiting time, and poor utilization of available space. As a result,
drivers often spend a considerable amount of time searching for vacant parking slots,
contributing to fuel wastage, pollution, stress, and traffic delays. These issues highlight the
urgent need for smarter and more efficient parking solutions.

The concept of smart parking has gained significant attention globally as part of smart city
development. The integration of IoT (Internet of Things), wireless communication, and
embedded systems has opened the door to intelligent, automated, and real-time parking
solutions. Motivated by these advancements, this project aims to design a low-cost, simple,
and highly effective intelligent parking system using ESP32, IR sensors, and an automated
gate. The motivation behind choosing this approach is to create a system that is affordable for
small and medium-scale areas such as colleges, residential complexes, hospitals, and office
buildings. Unlike expensive camera-based or ultrasonic solutions, IR sensors provide a
reliable and economical method for detecting vehicles. The ESP32 microcontroller, with its
inbuilt Wi-Fi, allows real-time updates on a web interface, ensuring that users can instantly
view parking slot availability without depending on human assistance.

Our motivation also comes from observing real-life problems around us—students and staff
struggling to find parking in college campuses, visitors wasting time at hospitals or malls, and
the need for organized systems that reduce human labor. With these observations, our goal is
to build a system that improves user experience, reduces congestion, automates entry
management, and makes parking facilities more efficient. By implementing this intelligent
parking model, we aim to contribute toward the development of smart infrastructure and
demonstrate how embedded systems and IoT technologies can solve practical, everyday
problems in an effective way.

Intelligent Parking Space Management System

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Managing parking spaces has become a serious challenge in rapidly growing urban and institutional
environments. Most parking systems still rely on manual supervision, which leads to frequent errors
in slot allocation, miscommunication, and inefficient use of available space. Drivers often struggle to
find empty parking slots, wasting valuable time and causing unnecessary traffic congestion near
parking areas. Additionally, the absence of real-time monitoring makes it difficult for users and
administrators to know the current status of parking slots, especially during peak hours. This results in
frustration, delays, and poor user experience.

Furthermore, conventional parking setups require multiple security personnel to manage vehicle entry
and exit, which increases operational costs. Many existing smart parking solutions are also expensive
because they use technologies such as cameras, RFID systems, or ultrasonic sensors. These systems
may not be affordable or feasible for small and medium-scale environments such as colleges, hospitals,
or residential complexes. Therefore, there is a need for a low-cost, automated, and efficient smart
parking system that can detect vehicle presence accurately, manage gate control automatically, and
display real-time parking availability without human involvement.

The problem, therefore, is to design and implement an intelligent, IoT-based parking management
system that solves issues of congestion, manual errors, and lack of real-time monitoring while being
cost-effective, simple to install, and scalable.

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE SURVEY
A literature survey is a systematic study of previously completed research, technologies, and
methodologies related to the project. For a smart parking system, this includes analysing
existing parking solutions, IoT-based monitoring systems, sensor technologies,
communication architectures, mobile applications, and automation techniques used globally.
The objective is to understand the current state of the art, identify limitations, and determine
the technological gaps that the proposed parking system can address.

Modern urbanization has significantly increased the number of vehicles, leading to challenges
such as congestion, time wastage, driver stress, and increased fuel consumption due to
inefficient parking search. Researchers have developed various smart parking systems using
technologies such as IoT, RFID, image processing, cloud computing, wireless sensor networks
(WSN), embedded controllers, and mobile applications. This survey covers major
contributions from past studies and compares different methods to evaluate their suitability for
real-time implementation.

2.1 REVIEW OF EXISTING WORK RELATED TO THE PROJECT

Smart parking systems have become an essential part of smart city infrastructure, and numerous
research studies and technological solutions have been proposed over the last decade. Existing
work in this domain mainly focuses on vehicle detection, slot management, mobile-based
guidance, and IoT-driven automation.

Several existing systems use ultrasonic sensors for vehicle detection. These systems provide good
accuracy but tend to be costly, require complex wiring, and face limitations in outdoor or noisy
environments. Some research papers propose camera-based parking systems using image
processing and machine learning techniques to identify vacant slots. Although these approaches
provide high precision, they require high-quality cameras, powerful processors, and stable
lighting conditions, making them unsuitable for small and medium-scale parking areas due to
their high implementation cost and maintenance complexity.

Other studies have introduced RFID-based parking solutions, where each vehicle is equipped with
an RFID tag that is scanned at the parking entrance. This method reduces manual dependency and
ensures secure vehicle access. However, the need for RFID tagging for every vehicle increases

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering AITM, Belagavi Page 4

Intelligent Parking Space Management System

cost and is not practical for places where outside visitors frequently come without pre-installed
tags. Some research also includes Bluetooth and GPS-based navigation systems for guiding users
to available parking slots. While useful, these systems suffer from inaccuracies in indoor or
basement locations where GPS signals are weak.

In recent IoT solutions, researchers increasingly use microcontrollers like Arduino, Node MCU,
Raspberry Pi, and ESP32 to design real-time smart parking systems. IoT cloud platforms such as
Blynk, Thingspeak, and Firebase are often used to display slot data. These solutions are effective
but may require continuous internet connectivity, which increases operating costs and introduces
delays. Some systems rely on complex cloud infrastructures, making them difficult to deploy in
rural or institutional settings.

Compared to these existing methods, our project focuses on a low-cost, reliable, and simpler IR
sensor-based approach supported by an ESP32 microcontroller with built-in Wi-Fi. This
combination eliminates the need for expensive sensors, avoids reliance on cloud servers, and
provides real-time slot status directly through a local web server. These characteristics make the
proposed system more suitable for small-scale deployments such as colleges, hospitals, offices,
and community parking areas where cost, simplicity, and ease of installation are major priorities.

1. IoT-Based Parking Systems

Several studies have explored IoT as the backbone of smart parking solutions. IoT enables real-
time monitoring of parking slots using embedded devices connected through wireless
technologies such as Wi-Fi, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, or Bluetooth Low Energy.
• Gupta et al. (2019) proposed a cloud-based IoT parking system using ultrasonic sensors to
detect vehicle presence. The data was processed on an ESP8266 microcontroller and
displayed on a mobile application.
• Al-Turjman (2020) introduced a scalable architecture using LoRaWAN for long-range
communication, suitable for large parking lots.
These studies showed that IoT systems reduce human dependency, provide real-time
availability updates, and improve user satisfaction.

real-time.
These systems offer high precision but require high computational power, stable lighting
conditions, and regular maintenance of cameras.

4. RFID and QR-Based Parking Management

Some researchers propose automated parking using RFID tags for vehicles:
• Sanchez et al. (2019) developed an RFID-based entry and exit system to reduce manual
verification.
Similarly, QR-code systems are emerging due to low cost but require user interaction and
scanning.

5. Cloud Computing and Database-Oriented Parking Systems

Cloud storage and web-based dashboards allow real-time monitoring and analytics.

1. IR Sensors for Slot Detection (4 Inputs)

You have used 4 IR sensors, each placed in front of a parking slot.
Each IR sensor works like this:
• If car present → IR beam breaks → Sensor output = LOW
• If slot empty → No obstruction → Sensor output = HIGH

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering AITM, Belagavi Page 17

Intelligent Parking Space Management System

Connections:
IR Sensor 1 → ESP32 GPIO
IR Sensor 2 → ESP32 GPIO
IR Sensor 3 → ESP32 GPIO
IR Sensor 4 → ESP32 GPIO

These IR sensors help ESP32 perform:

✔ Slot occupancy detection
✔ Real-time availability display on website

✔ Wrong parking (if someone parks in reserved slot)

✔ Overstay timer activation (counting time after detection)

2. Ultrasonic Sensor Only at Gate

You have only one ultrasonic sensor, placed at the entrance gate.

It detects:
If a vehicle approaches the gate
If car is within 20–30 cm

Operation:
Distance < 20 cm → ESP32 opens gate using servo
After car enters → sensor no longer detects car → gate closes
This avoids human interference or manual gate control.

2. ESP32 System Control

ESP32 reads:
• IR sensor digital inputs
• 1 Ultrasonic TRIG/ECHO inputs

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering AITM, Belagavi Page 18

• Wrong-slot alert system
• It also connects to Wi-Fi and hosts a website.

4. Servo Motor for Gate Control

The servo motor opens or closes the gate based on ultrasonic sensor detection.
• ESP32 GPIO → Servo signal
• Buck converter 5V → Servo power

Servo positions:
• 0° – gate closed
• 90° – gate open

5. Buzzer for Alerts

The buzzer is activated by ESP32 for:
✔ Overstay Warning
The system starts a timer as soon as an IR sensor becomes LOW.
If vehicle stays beyond limited time, buzzer beeps.
✔ Wrong Slot Warning
If a vehicle parks in a reserved slot, ESP32 detects mismatch → buzzer activates.

6. Buck Converter for Power

Your parking system runs on 12V.
12V input → LM2596 Buck → 5V output

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering AITM, Belagavi Page 19

3.3PROCESS FLOW AND TECHNICAL DETAILS OF THE PROJECT

he Smart Parking System works by first detecting a vehicle approaching the parking area using
ultrasonic or infrared sensors installed in each slot. The microcontroller receives signals from the
sensors and determines whether the slot is available or occupied. If the slot is free, it is marked as
“available,” and the LED or LCD display guides the driver to the empty slot. At the same time, the
slot status is updated in real-time on the mobile application or cloud server for remote monitoring.
When the driver parks, the system continuously monitors the slot, and once the vehicle leaves, the
sensors detect the vacancy, updating both the display and the mobile application immediately. This
ensures efficient slot management, reduces waiting time, and provides real-time information to
users.
