Quantitative Aptitude – Concise Notes
Simplification & Approximation
Concept: Questions test calculation speed using BODMAS rule and approximations.
Example: (15.98 × 4.02) ÷ 8 ≈ 8.
Shortcut: Use approximation for decimals and fractions.
Tip: Memorise squares (1–30), cubes (1–20), % to fraction values.
Number Series
Concept: Identify missing or wrong number patterns.
Example: 2, 4, 8, 16, ? → ×2 → 32.
Shortcut: Check for +, −, ×, ÷ or square patterns.
Tip: Observe differences or ratios quickly.
Quadratic Equations
Concept: Solve for x using factorization or comparison.
Example: x² + 5x + 6 = 0 → x = −2, −3.
Shortcut: Multiply coefficient of x² and constant term for factoring.
Tip: Compare both equations systematically.
Data Interpretation (DI)
Concept: Based on data from tables, bar graphs, line graphs, or pie charts.
Example: Find % increase or average from a table.
Shortcut: % Change = [(New−Old)/Old]×100, Average = Sum/N.
Tip: Practice ratio comparison and approximation to save time.
Averages
Concept: Mean of group of numbers.
Example: Average of 10, 20, 30 = 60/3 = 20.
Shortcut: Average = (Sum of all observations)/(No. of observations).
Tip: Use assumed mean method for large numbers.
Percentages
Concept: Express ratio as per hundred.
Example: 20% of 250 = 50.
Shortcut: 1% = 1/100, 50% = 1/2, 25% = 1/4.
Tip: Master fraction–percentage conversions.
Ratio & Proportion
Concept: Compares two quantities.
Example: Ratio 2:3 means 2/3.
Shortcut: a:b = c:d → ad = bc.
Tip: Keep ratios in simplest form.
Time, Speed & Distance
Concept: Relation between distance, speed, and time.
Example: Distance = Speed × Time.
Shortcut: If speed changes, average speed = (2xy)/(x+y).
Tip: Convert minutes to hours carefully.
Time & Work
Concept: Work done ∝ Time × Efficiency.
Example: If A does work in 10 days, B in 20 → together in (1/10 + 1/20)■¹ = 6.67 days.
Shortcut: Total work = LCM of days.
Tip: Use efficiency ratio = 1/time.
Simple & Compound Interest
Concept: Interest on principal over time.
Example: SI = (P×R×T)/100, CI = P(1 + R/100)^T − P.
Shortcut: For 2 years CI = SI + (SI×R)/100.
Tip: Remember compound interest grows faster.
Profit, Loss & Discount
Concept: Based on cost price (CP) and selling price (SP).
Example: Profit% = [(SP−CP)/CP]×100.
Shortcut: Discount% = (MP−SP)/MP ×100.
Tip: CP, SP, MP relations are key to fast solving.
Partnership
Concept: Partners invest with time & amount ratio.
Example: A:B = (Investment×Time)A : (Investment×Time)B.
Shortcut: Profit ∝ Investment × Time.
Tip: Convert months to years properly.
Mixture & Alligation
Concept: Mixing two or more entities with different ratios.
Example: 60% and 80% milk solutions → mean = 70%.
Shortcut: Use alligation rule: (Mean−Low):(High−Mean).
Tip: Use alligation for ratio or percentage questions.
