Introduction to Transformers

A transformer is a static electrical device

that transfers electrical energy between
two or more circuits through
electromagnetic induction. It is a vital
component in the transmission and
distribution of electrical power, allowing
the voltage to be stepped up for efficient
transmission or stepped down for safe
usage.
Principle of Operation

Transformers operate on the principle of

electromagnetic induction, specifically
Faraday’s law of electromagnetic
induction. When an alternating current
(AC) passes through the primary coil, it
creates a varying magnetic field. This
changing magnetic field induces an
electromotive force (EMF) in the
secondary coil.
Construction of a Transformer
A transformer consists of three main
parts:

steel, it provides a path for the
magnetic flux and reduces energy
losses due to eddy currents.

Other components include insulation,
cooling systems, and bushings.
Types of Transformers

 Step-Up Transformer
A step-up transformer increases the
voltage from the primary to the
secondary coil. The number of turns in
the secondary coil is greater than in the
primary coil, resulting in a higher output
voltage. These are commonly used in
power plants for efficient long-distance
power transmission.
 Step-Down Transformer
A step-down transformer decreases the
voltage from the primary to the
secondary coil. The number of turns in
the secondary coil is less than in the
primary coil, resulting in a lower output
voltage. These are commonly used to
reduce voltage for household and
industrial applications.
Theory Behind Transformers
The working of a transformer can be
explained using the following equations:
 Faraday’s Law of Induction:
where is the induced EMF, is the
number of turns, and is the rate of
change of magnetic flux.

 Turns Ratio: where and are

the secondary and primary
voltages, and and are the number
of turns in the secondary and
primary coils.

 Power Conservation:
where and are the primary and
secondary currents.
