A tool/activity used to assess skill, fitness, knowledge or
performance
Examples: Push-up test, 600-yard run, IQ test

Measurement
Numerical data collected from tests
Answers: “How much?”
Units: seconds, cm, kg, score

Evaluation
Judgement of performance using test + measurement
Results: good / average / poor, selection, grading

Scales of Measurement
Nominal – Naming/grouping only
(male/female, games)

Ordinal – Ranking
(1st, 2nd, 3rd)

Interval – Equal gaps, no true zero

(temperature)
Ratio – Equal gaps + true zero
(height, weight, speed)
Importance in Sports (Write any 4–5)
Selection of players
Track progress (pre vs post test)
Identify potential & suitable sports
Allot games by age/height/weight
Prepare norms (age, gender, level)
Predict performance
Motivation
Goal setting & training planning
Helpful in research & technique development

Formulas You MUST Remember

BMI
\text{BMI} = \frac{\text{Weight (kg)}}{[\text{Height (m)}]^2}
Underweight: < 18.5
Overweight/Obese: ≥ 25

Waist–Hip Ratio (WHR)

\text{WHR} = \frac{\text{Waist Circumference}}{\text{Hip
Circumference}}

Skinfold Measurement (Idea Only)

Jackson–Pollock 3-site method
Uses sum of 3 skinfolds + age
Converts to body density → % body fat
Different sites for males & females
Somatotypes (William Sheldon)
Endomorph
Round, soft, more fat
Gain weight easily, low agility
Best for: Weight lifting, power lifting

Mesomorph
Muscular, athletic, broad shoulders
Low fat, strong
Best for: Most sports

Ectomorph
Thin, long limbs
Less muscle, high endurance
Best for: Athletics, swimming, gymnastics

\text{FI} = \frac{100 \times \text{Test Duration (sec)}}{2 \
times \text{Sum of Recovery Heartbeats}}

Muscular Strength
Standing Broad Jump – leg strength
Barrow Medicine Ball Throw – arm & shoulder strength

Kraus–Weber Strength Tests (5):

1. Straight-leg sit-up (abdomen & back)
2. Bent-knee sit-up (abdomen)
3. Leg raise 10″ (hold)
4. Chest lift (upper back)
5. Leg lift (lower back)

Sit & Reach Test – farthest reach recorded

Body Composition
BMI
Waist–Hip Ratio
Skinfold (3-site)
