Design of Reinforced Concrete Beam

The document outlines the design process for a rectangular reinforced concrete beam with a 5 m effective span, 250 mm width, and 500 mm overall depth, using M-20 concrete and Fe-415 HYSD bars. It includes calculations for factored bending moment, required tension steel, and shear design, ultimately recommending a beam with 4 bars of 20 mm diameter for tension reinforcement and 8 mm 2-legged stirrups at 200 mm spacing for shear reinforcement. All designs adhere to the IS 456:2000 limit state method.

Question

Question asked by Filo student

Design a rectangular reinforced concrete beam with:

 Effective span = 5 m
 Width = 250 mm
 Overall depth = 500 mm
 Effective cover = 50 mm
 Live load = 37 kN/m
 Materials: M-20 concrete, Fe-415 HYSD bars

Concepts
Limit state design, bending moment, shear force, effective depth, area of tension reinforcement, IS 456:2000
provisions

Explanation
A simply supported beam under UDL is designed by:

1. Calculating factored bending moment and shear.

2. Finding required tension steel (singly reinforced).
3. Checking section adequacy and minimum steel.
4. Designing shear reinforcement.

Step 1: Data and effective depth

 Span, L = 5 m = 5000 mm
 b = 250 mm, D = 500 mm, cover = 50 mm
 d = D – cover = 500 – 50 = 450 mm
 Live load = 37 kN/m, ρ_concrete = 25 kN/m³

Step 2: Load calculations

 Self‐weight = b·D·1 m·25 kN/m³ = 0.25·0.5·25 = 3.125 kN/m

 Total load w = 3.125 + 37 = 40.125 kN/m

Step 3: Factored bending moment

For simply supported beam under UDL, Mu=wL2/8 (load factor 1.5):

 Factored load = 1.5·40.125 = 60.1875 kN/m

 Mu=60.1875⋅52/8=188.08 kN\cdotpmMu=60.1875⋅52/8=188.08 kN\cdotpm
 In N·mm: Mu=188.08×106 N\cdotpmmMu=188.08×106 N\cdotpmm

Step 4: Area of tension steel

Using Mu=0.87fyAstd

 Ast=Mu/(0.87⋅415⋅450)=188.08×106/(0.87⋅415⋅450)≈1097 mm2

Step 5: Select reinforcement

Area of one 20 mm dia bar = π/4⋅202=314 mm2

 No. of bars = 1097/314 ≈ 3.49 → 4 bars

 Ast,prov=4⋅314=1256 mm2
 Check minimum steel: Ast,min=0.85bd/fy=0.85⋅250⋅450/415≈231 mm2 ⇒ OK

Step 6: Shear design

 Factored shear at support: Vu=wL/2=60.1875⋅5/2=150.47 kN

 Nominal shear stress: τv=Vu/(bd)=150470/(250⋅450)≈1.34 N/mm2
 From IS 456 Table 19, for M-20 and Ast/(bd)=1256/(112500)=0.0112, τc≈0.62 N/mm2
 Since τv>τc, provide stirrups.

Shear to be taken by stirrups:

Vus=Vu−τcbd=150470−0.62⋅250⋅450=150470−69675=80795N
Use 2‐legged 8 mm dia stirrups: Asv=2×(π/4⋅82)=100.5 mm2
Spacing, s=0.87fyvAsvd/Vus=0.87⋅415⋅100.5⋅450/80795≈202 mm
Limit spacing ≤ min(0.75d=337.5 mm, 300 mm) ⇒ 200 mm c/c

Final Answer
Provide a 250 mm×500 mm beam with:

 Tension reinforcement: 4 bars of 20 mm dia (Fe-415) at bottom (effective depth 450 mm)
 Shear reinforcement: 8 mm 2-legged stirrups @ 200 mm c/c
 Concrete grade M-20, effective cover 50 mm

All designs as per IS 456:2000 limit state method.
