Autonomous Flight Control System
Abstract
This project presents a long-range autonomous drone system designed for the fast and precise
delivery of critical medical supplies. The hybrid VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) drone combines
the precision landing capability of quadcopters with the extended flight range of fixed-wing aircraft,
addressing the challenges of reaching rural or disaster-hit areas with limited infrastructure.
Problem Identification
Many regions lack proper infrastructure for delivering life-saving medical supplies. Conventional
drones either lack range or landing accuracy. Quadcopters can land accurately but have limited
range, while fixed-wing drones cover longer distances but cannot land precisely. A hybrid solution is
required to meet the demand for speed, range, and pinpoint delivery.
Objectives
- Develop a drone system capable of long-range flight and accurate payload delivery.
- Integrate a winch-based delivery mechanism to avoid the need for landing.
- Ensure efficient power consumption and rapid takeoff using a catapult mechanism.
System Architecture
The drone uses PX4 autopilot software on a Pixhawk flight controller paired with a companion
computer. Sensors include GPS, IMU, barometer, magnetometer, and optional Lidar. Tilt rotors enable
vertical takeoff and hovering, while fixed-wing mode supports efficient cruising. Flight control is
handled through MAVLink protocol and QGroundControl interface.
Flight Modes
1. Launch: Catapult-based takeoff
2. Cruise: GPS waypoint navigation
3. Transition: Switches to hover near delivery site
4. Delivery: Winch lowers medical payload during hover
5. Landing: Precision hover and descent guided by sensors
Software & Hardware Integration
- PX4 firmware and MAVLink communication
- Dual-battery system for redundancy
11
- Fixed-wing propulsion and tilt-rotor VTOL motors
- Safety features include Return-to-Launch (RTL), geofencing, and failsafes
Inspiration
The project was inspired by practical aeronautical training under the Air Force NCC program and
hands-on experience as a co-pilot in a microlight aircraft. Skills learned in flight control and
aerodynamics were applied in aeromodelling and the development of this drone system.
