Assignment: Rotation and Revolution of the Earth

Prepared by: ______________________ Class: ___________ Date: ___________

Introduction
The Earth is constantly moving in space, and its two main types of motion are rotation and
revolution. These movements are responsible for many of the natural phenomena we
experience every day, such as day and night, and the changing of seasons. Understanding
these two motions helps us learn how time, climate, and life on Earth are organized.

Rotation of the Earth

Rotation means the spinning of the Earth on its own axis. The Earth rotates from west to
east, which makes the Sun appear to rise in the east and set in the west. One full rotation of
the Earth takes approximately 24 hours, which makes one day.

The Earth’s axis is an imaginary line that passes through its North Pole and South Pole. It is
tilted at an angle of about 23.5° from the vertical. This tilt, along with rotation, causes
variations in daylight and temperature at different places on Earth. The rotation of Earth is
responsible for the occurrence of day and night. As the Earth spins, the side facing the Sun
experiences daylight, while the other side experiences darkness, or night.

Revolution of the Earth

The revolution of the Earth is its movement around the Sun in an elliptical orbit. It takes
approximately 365¼ days (one year) for the Earth to complete one full revolution. This
movement, combined with the tilt of the Earth’s axis, causes the change of seasons —
spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

During revolution, different parts of the Earth receive varying amounts of sunlight. When
the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, it experiences summer, while the
Southern Hemisphere experiences winter, and vice versa. The equinoxes (around March 21
and September 23) are the times of the year when both hemispheres receive equal amounts
of sunlight, resulting in equal day and night durations.

Effects of Rotation and Revolution
• Day and Night: Rotation causes alternate periods of light and darkness across the globe.
• Time Zones: Different parts of the world have different times due to Earth’s rotation.
• Seasons: Revolution and axial tilt cause changes in temperature and climate.
• Variation in Day Length: The tilt of the axis makes days longer in summer and shorter in
winter.

Conclusion
The rotation and revolution of the Earth are fundamental to life on our planet. Rotation
gives us day and night, helping to regulate time, while revolution brings about the change of
seasons, affecting agriculture, weather, and ecosystems. Understanding these movements
helps us appreciate how perfectly balanced and dynamic our planet truly is.
