The Importance of Missing Tuesdays

In a town where Tuesday mysteriously disappears, residents initially fail to notice the absence, but soon feel an unsettling rush as unresolved tensions build. Harlan, a retired math teacher, realizes that without the day, no conflicts or healing occur, leading to a brittle atmosphere among the townspeople. When a power outage finally restores the missing day, emotions are released, allowing for necessary conflicts and resolutions, culminating in Harlan marking the day as 'returned' on his calendar.

Harlan walked the streets, uneasy. Tuesday had always been the day things went slightly wrong.

A town discovered it was missing a Tuesday.
No one noticed at first. Life has inertia; it rolls forward even when something small goes missing.
But by Wednesday morning, people felt oddly rushed, like they’d overslept without remembering
sleep.
Calendars disagreed. Some jumped from Monday to Wednesday. Others insisted Tuesday had
happened and accused the rest of being careless. Digital systems quietly corrected themselves and
refused to explain how.
A retired math teacher named Harlan noticed the real problem: nothing bad had happened.
No arguments escalated. Nre there, bound and complete. Headlines described minor disasters that
no one remembered experiencing. A kitchen fire. A missed train. A careless word that ended a
friendship.

“We needed a day to absorb the damage.”
Harlan felt a chill. Damage doesn’tnts occurred. No regrettable emails were sent. The hospital
reported zero emergencies. The police logged nothing but a cat in a tree, and even the cat climbed
down on its own.

Over the following weeks, the town grew brittle. People were polite but distant. Laughter sounded
forced, like a habit rather than a response. Small frustrations stacked without release. Nothing went
wrong, but nothing healed either.
Then, one night, the power went out.
Not just electricity. Sound. Motion. Even thought seemed to pause, suspended like dust in still air.
For exactly twenty-four hours.
When the lights came back, it was Wednesday again.
The town exhaled. Arguments happened. Plates broke. Someone said something unforgivable and
meant it. Someone else forgave them anyway. Rain flooded a basement. A child skinned their knee
and learned they were not invincible.
By morning, everyone felt tired but intact.
On his calendar, Harlan wrote in the missing square, carefully and deliberately:
“TUESDAY (returned)”
He underlined it twice.
Some days are necessary not because they are good, but because they allow the universe to bruise
without shattering.
