River Engineering Study and Analysis

The document outlines a group assignment on river engineering, requiring a report on a local river's benefits, flooding issues, basin inclusion, tributary order, surrounding zones, and classification based on various factors. It also includes flume tests to determine bed roughness and calculations for bottom shear stress under specific conditions. Additionally, it involves fluid flow analysis to find roughness heights for different boundary conditions.

River Engineering
[Link] that you are employed by one company and planned to gather information to update
Water resources (River) study throughout the country and you are assigned to gather the
information for the river nearest to your own place (the river you recognize very well). Therefore
you will be expected to prepare a report including the following:
 Benefits of the river currently it is providing or proposed projects,
 Flooding problems of the River and Remedial action taken if there was flooding problem,
 To which basin the river was included,
 Order of the River by specifying the tributaries if it is not first order stream,
 Zone of river around your observation or site,
 Classification of river based on:
 Variation of discharge,
 Location of reach and
 Plan form,
[Link] tests with water depth h=1m, the measured velocities at the elevation of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and
0.6 m are 0.53, 0.58, 0.64 and 0.67 m/s, respectively. Determine bed roughness k s by checking
for possible type of boundaries types and also assume Von Korman constant, k=0.4.
3.A project is to be located at the water depth h=5 m. The measured tidal current velocity is U=1
m/s. The sediment size is d90=0.15 mm. It is estimated that the height of sand ripples is 10 cm.
then determine

a. Bottom shear stress τb, when there are sand ripples with height of app. 10 cm on the
bed.
b. Bottom shear stress τb, if the flow is hydraulically smooth.

[Link] at 20oC flows over the flat surface with a velocity such that the shear stress is 10N/m 2.
The kinematic viscosity of fluid flow at 20oC is 1.01*10-6m2/s. Then determine:
a. The maximum roughness height that will result in smooth boundary,
b. The minimum roughness height for which the boundary will be rough and
c. The average roughness height for which the boundary will be transitional boundary.
