Exploring Longitudinal & Transverse Waves

This document is an activity worksheet for students at Binanuanan High School aimed at exploring the properties and behaviors of longitudinal and transverse waves. It includes objectives, materials, procedures for creating waves, sketching and labeling wave diagrams, measuring wavelengths, and analyzing wave characteristics. The worksheet also prompts students to reflect on their observations and define key terms related to wave properties.

ACTIVITY WORKSHEET NO. 1
Exploring Longitudinal & Transverse Waves
GROUP NUMBER/NAME: __________________________ DATE: _____________

Objective: To investigate and describe the properties and behaviors of

longitudinal and transverse waves.
Materials:
Slinky (or rope, if not available)
Ruler or tape measure
Procedure:

Part 1. Creating Waves

1. Your group will use a slinky or spring or rope to create two types of waves.
a. longitudinal wave: Create by pushing and pulling the slinky along its length.
b. transverse wave: Create by moving the slinky side to side or up and down
perpendicular to its length.

Part 2. Wave Diagrams and Labelling

2. Sketch the waves you observe below. Label the following features on your
sketches:
a. For transverse wave: crest, trough, amplitude, wavelength
b. For longitudinal wave: compression, rarefaction, wavelength

TRANSVERSE WAVE SKETCH:

LONGITUDINAL WAVE SKETCH:

Part 3. Measurements
3. Measure and record the wavelength of each type (length between
two crests or compressions).
Wavelength of transverse wave: __________ cm
Wavelength of longitudinal wave: _________ cm

4. Change the intensity of your wave movement (push/pull, stronger/weaker)

and observe changes in amplitude (height/intensity):

How does amplitude change with movement intensity?

Does the wavelength change when you vary the intensity? Explain.

Part 4. Reflection and Analysis

5. Define the following terms based on your activity and observations:
a. Amplitude: __________________________________________________________________
b. Wavelength: ________________________________________________________________
c. Frequency: __________________________________________________________________

6. Describe how particles move in each type of wave:

a. Transverse wave: ___________________________________________________________
b. Longitudinal wave: __________________________________________________________

7. How do amplitude and wavelength relate to the energy and speed of a wave?
Give examples from your observations.
