Process Journal Day# 1

Goal: My goal is to bring joy and happiness to the kids who suffer from cancer, as to show

them that not all hope is lost and that happiness is always within you. I want to show them

that they should keep going through these rough times and to look at the bright side of life. I

want to raise awareness about how kids feel depressed because they have cancer and I want

to inform people how chemotherapy is greatly affecting them in a negative way. in addition,

many kids who suffer from cancer do not have hair because of how hard chemotherapy is.

Therefore, my group and I want to bring wigs for example to show them that there are ways

to find happiness in this world evn if you are in your weakest points there is always a positive

light that will shine.

Why did u choose this group?

I chose this group because I can easily communicate with them and we can easily understand

eachother as we can always find a way to share different smart and creative ideas as I believe

that if we work together we can create something special that can stand out.

Why did I choose this topic?

I chose this topic because many kids do suffer from caner and finding a way to be happy or

feeling left out or lonely as I want to show them that we are with them and we can hekp them

overcome cancer. As I felt really bad for kids that are really small in age who were diagnosed

with cancer as they missed their childhood and do go through serious depression.

Process Journal Day#2

Prior Knowledge, linking our ideas to subjects:

1- Math

- We will need math for when we want to make money as we will need to find the

appropriate prices and how much we will make and what we can use from the

money we made to buy things (such as the wigs) for the kids diagnosed with

cancer

2- Drama

- We will need Drama for when we want to do our makeup and cosplay (act as

certain characters) when we want to make them and entertaining show as we are

going to use makeup. Costume, etc.

3- Art and design

- We are planning to make crafts to sell and make money, such as bracelets and

artworks, as we will need to learn how to do so using Art

4- Science

- We will need to use science to learn about cancer and how does it affect the

hormones of oneself as we should educate ourself about the people we are trying

to help

Strand 3: Research

The Hussein Centre for Cancer holds a Run-For-Life event in different schools in

which they sell shirts where all the receipts made are donated to kids with cancer. These

shirts are worn during a run that happens in the school, this isn’t only a fun activity for kids

but to also donate money to cancer patients. While a speech was held during an advisory

class about the Run-For-Life we asked the speaker, who works at the centre, about their

offices, where they are located, and how we can donate money. That’s when we got the idea

to sell bracelets and chokers during the Run-For-Life as a fundraiser as all receipts go to

cancer.

From the interview, I conducted that the Hussein Cancer Centre offices are located in

Um Uthaina, where we can donate money and gifts for children cancer patients. The amiable

lady also gave us a booth from the centre itself to display the bracelets we made as she

appreciated what we were doing for children with cancer.

Mayar Al-Shadfan was able to find beads and rubber to help us make the bracelet as I

also found real rocks to also make bracelets from. The beads were bought from a shop called

Sultan accessories in Thabet Ben Dinar St. 14, Amman. It took us about 5-7 hours to make 26

bracelets and 9 chokers.

In addition, my group and I asked our organizer Ms Suha Yasin, for advice on what

the price of our bracelets should be and when can we sell these bracelets as the bracelets

came to the total of 2-3 JD’s and the chokers were for 4 JD’s.

We ended up selling everything except for 1 bracelet. Therefore, our total came to be

91.70 JD’s which has met our expectations.

Step 3: Proposal of Action

How will I address this need?

- We are Jordanian students from English Talents School [ETS], Sara Al-Qasem, Mayar Al-Shadfan,

and Lemar Jemshid. We strongly believe that sensitivity and empathy, as well as human rights and

dignity, are critical community characteristics, particularly in the Cancer community. We seek

fairness and development [which would be our global context] in our project because we envision a

bright future for everybody suffering from cancer. Cancer patients have always been on our hearts,

and we've always wanted to help them because of how much they suffer and how little gratitude they

receive, so we leaped at the possibility to aid them through this community effort. So, our goal is to

provide joy to the community of cancer patients by providing them hope and strength to battle, as well

as allowing them to do things they would not be able to do in their daily life, such as meeting

characters from their favorite movies, decorating cakes, watching shows, and so on. Nonetheless, we'd

want to gather funds for people who cannot afford their treatment (chemotherapy), so they can live a

normal, happy life and know they're not alone in this cruel world.

- My action is to help provide a solution and aid the Cancer Community in the King Hussein Cancer

Center. As one of the key elements specified in our aim, we will acquire enough resources to

manufacture appealing bracelets that we will sell in our school in order to raise enough money to

donate to the Cancer Center (approximately 100-150 JD's). Nonetheless, we intend to raise cancer

awareness among our students, anybody who sees our future PowerPoint, and everyone who learns

about our project through the creation of a Discord server. Finally, we would consider our mission a

success if we were able to meet with the personnel of the King Hussein Cancer Center and give the

funds we had raised, thereby making an appointment for our activities. Furthermore, we would

consider it a complete success if we included an additional activity to our journey, such as a movie

night and a brief activity for the patients to make their day more enjoyable. If our action ends up a

success in the future, patients would have at least a small amount of money to help with their

medication and an eventful memory to look back to after the activity which will be held virtually on

Zoom.

-We believe that all three of us fared well in terms of self-management. We were able to set a meeting

with the King Hussein Cancer Center with the help of our supervisor [Miss Suha], and we arrived on

time and provided them the exact amount of money we promised. Nonetheless, we were early in

terms of creating and selling the bracelets; we didn't wait until the last minute or postpone in that area.

However, we were a little late in coordinating a date to undertake the activity with the students, which

could have been done earlier, and in selecting what the activity should be. Finally, we had to come up

with a last-minute plan for what to sell at the bake sale, which should have been done earlier as well.

ii. Evaluation of Service

-We exceeded the majority of our expectations and specifications. We were able to make and sell

bracelets as planned, and even donate the proceeds to the center. Furthermore, we were given the

opportunity to create an activity with the children, but due to the fact that the world is in the grip of a

pandemic, we were forced to do so virtually, even though we had planned to do so face to face. We

also planned to visit the center dressed as characters and create a day full of activities for the kids,

such as a movie night, but that part of the plan fell through.

Approaches to learning (ATL) skill development:

-In terms of self-management, we believe that all three of us performed admirably. With the

assistance of our supervisor [Miss Suha], we were able to schedule a meeting with the King Hussein

Cancer Center, and we arrived on time and gave them the exact amount of money we promised.

Nonetheless, we were ahead of schedule in terms of designing and selling the bracelets; we didn't wait

until the last minute or postpone in that regard. We also learned various other skills throughout the

assignment, such as organization skills while developing plans and planning our time. In addition, we

learned reflection skills while reflecting on our job and researching skills while conducting interviews

and discovering new ways to deal with cancer patients.

-Despite this, there are a handful of things we might have done differently to improve our project,

such as selling more items to raise a larger gift for the King Hussein Cancer Center. Nonetheless, for

the exercise, we may have painted the plastic plates green to make the turtles look more appealing to

the patients and less plain.

iii. Communication Skills:

We communicated and coordinated rather well as partners throughout our journey, using Microsoft

Teams and Instagram, as well as communicating face to face during classes and meeting up with each

other. For instance, instead of being left out, we'd ensure that everyone agreed on a particular point

and was pleased with it. We spoke with the supervisor via Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, and in-

person. In retrospect, we should have communicated a little more to collect more comments and better

our idea. Finally, with the assistance of our supervisor, we were able to speak with Niveen and Zaina

[representatives from the King Hussain Cancer Center] in order to give them the proceeds from the

fundraising and plan a meeting for the activity.

Social Skills:

-We were able to apply and enhance our social skills during our project by being responsible enough

to make decisions such as arranging appointments and arriving on time. It also came in handy to be

responsible in terms of managing our time and being punctual. Finally, we were able to handle the

minor conflicts that arose, such as not knowing what to offer for the bake sale until the last minute,

but luckily we were able to make the decisions and not miss a deadline.

People suffering from cancer have always been on our minds, and we've always

wanted to help them because of how much they suffer and how little gratitude they receive,

so when we found out we could help them through this community project, we jumped at the

chance. So, our goal is to create happiness in the community of people suffering from cancer

by giving them hope and strength to fight, as well as allowing them to experience things they

would not have the opportunity to do in their daily lives, such as meeting characters from

their favorite movies, decorating cakes, watching shows, and so on. Nonetheless, we'd like to

raise money for individuals who can't afford their treatment (chemotherapy), so they can live

a normal, happy life. To summarize, our purpose is to assist cancer patients by demonstrating

that they are not alone and by providing a glimpse of how to live a normal life.

All of our expectations that we had for our journey were fulfilled. To begin, we were

able to meet with the employees in the King Hussein Cancer Centre and have multiple

meetings with them to discuss the fundraising, to give them the money, and to distribute the

kits, among other things. We were also able to acquire enough supplies to create appealing

bracelets and necklaces to offer as a fundraiser as the employees were cooperative and

appreciative of our effort and project. We were able to donate 153 JDs to the Cancer Centre,

which surpassed our expectations. Furthermore, we outperformed our expectations when we

sold out during the bake sale, despite our concerns that we wouldn't make enough money or

be able to sell at the event but we eventually did sell out pretty quick. We were able to

develop a short activity and provide the kits with the necessary supplies to the children. We

took precautions such as sanitizing the kits and doing the activity virtually.

We were able to arrange two fundraisers, contribute the funds, and had the

opportunity to hold an activity virtually with the patients, therefore I don't feel we necessarily

failed during our project. We may have fallen short in terms of communication with our

supervisor because we didn't provide nearly enough updates on the journey as we reflected on

ourselves and better communicated afterwards. Our project was a success, but there were a

few things we might have done differently.

We could have really gone to the center and helped with an activity there if this

initiative had taken place before the pandemic. It would have been a once-in-a-lifetime

experience for the cancer patients, and one they would never forget. Additionally, we might

have picked a more stable activity or just a different one; even if the one we did was great, we

could have chosen another and prepared for it far better. Furthermore, we could have held

additional fundraising activities to gather more money to contribute to the center, which

would have aided the center significantly.

After our project, we were able to make a significant impact on those suffering from

cancer by demonstrating that we are here for them and that they are not alone; in fact,

everyone is supporting them. Also, we were also able to keep the kids entertained for at least

an hour because of the activity. Finally, we hope that our fund-raising event aided those

suffering from these chronic illnesses, since every penny counts

What advice would you give others about doing a service project?

-I would advise them to stick to a schedule and stay on time, even if it is difficult at times.

They should work very hard to be extremely organized in their work and should have time

management, as this will have a significant impact on their grade. Finally, make your project

stand out by experimenting with new ideas and being creative. Also try to use and develop as

many ATL Skills as possible as that would aid you throughout your journey.

What does service mean to you after completing the project?

-Community service is defined as volunteering and taking action to help and serve your

community. After finishing my project, I realized that I had done something that the members

of the community I served greatly appreciated, that I had made them happy and loved, which

is something I am extremely proud of, and I hope to do something bigger and better in the

future. Having the opportunity to aid such communities is such an honor and has put a great

impact on me and has made me realize how much different communities are greatly in need

and how it is my duty as a human to aid them.

Which of the Learner Profile attribute did you find yourself exhibiting at different

times and why?

We used the majority of them, but communication and thinking were two of the leaner profile

attributes we used the most, because we interacted with many individuals such as the

employees in the KHCC, Niveen and Zainab. We also used communication skills when

communication with the patients virtually. As this Learner Profile was very necessary to be

used as it helped us be responsible and professional with the organizers but fun with the

patients. We also used Thinking skills when learning how to think critically but also

creatively. We were able to manage our time and plan ahead our next major steps and overall,

our action plan. We were able to also thinking creatively when producing kits for the

activities, creating the poster to lure customers to our falafel stand and so on. We also

developed principled as we were responsible when it came to planning ahead for our first

fundraiser, as well as handling and organizing the falafel stand during the bake sale and

selling out very quickly.

Have you improved in any of these qualities?

My communication skills have improved in a variety of ways as a result of speaking with a

variety of people and receiving suggestions from some as well as support from others. My

empathy is another area where I've grown. Many of the children were in poor health, which

taught me that I, and everyone else, should care more about those who are in suffering and be

much more appreciative and grateful for what we have. I gave developed the skill of self-

management and how to think critically in situations that took place during our journey, this

quality can hep and assist me throughout my whole life in terms of school, events, work and

so on.
