On the occasion of the completion of the Higher Vocational Training Cycle in Modeling and
Modeling we must create a model in which we apply and show, in the
as much as possible, the techniques and content learned during the two years of
duration. This includes controlling all phases of the model's realization, starting
from the idea, the design, and the plans, going through the choice of materials, until
to reach the production of the pieces, the final assembly and the aesthetic aspects that are
they want to incorporate.
This means that the project should focus on creating a model like this.
that requires the student to prove that they are capable of facing all those tasks. And
among the different proposals and recommendations from the teaching staff, I chose
by the small and acclaimed Pixar robot, WALL-E.
Creating a model like this requires working on the design in all its aspects,
knowing the historical-artistic background; knowing the materials
suitable for carrying out the project; and to know and perform the technical operations
of making and assembling pieces. So it seemed like a good idea for me
project.
2. Definition of the project and contextualization in the workplace environment.
The choice of this project arises from several facts. Since it was a
completely free work I started to think about what I would like
work intensively for three months and that I couldn't hate the
second day. The first thing that came to my mind were the movies
Disney and Pixar productions, which have always amazed me so much. From
Among my favorite movies, I chose Wall-E because I think it would be favorable.
my strong point, the line and the cleanliness. And as a final point, and no less
important, the theme of the movie, which is already reflected on our planet, the excess of
trash and at the same time, the attempt to find a solution to this.
This is how Wall-E is born, a garbage compactor that after many years is the
the only survivor of her species, who will even develop emotions of her own
humans.
In a work environment, this model, although it may seem so, is far away.
to be a toy. It can have many purposes: to serve for an exhibition with
reason for a Disney or Pixar anniversary (like the one that took place in the months
previous to the summer in Madrid "Pixar, 25 years of animation"; for the premiere of the
movie; for some collector; for occasional or permanent decoration of
commercial establishments that have some relation to the world of children, cinema, of the
decoration or even the environment; to incorporate with educational intent in the
educational world; to turn it into a gift object; to incorporate it into campaigns
motivation about recycling; to use it as props in some production
for theater or cinema... In short, this model can serve multiple purposes.
One of the things that has led me to do this project, as I mentioned earlier,
it's a more linear project, since I feel more comfortable applying plans than
free structures and of which I have much more knowledge and ease for it to remain
clean, which in techniques for more naturalistic elements such as mountains
abstract forms.
The main material I will use for almost the entirety of the model will be PVC.
(Polyvinyl chloride) of different thicknesses, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, and 10mm. It comes from the
family of plastics, organic materials composed mainly of
carbon and other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur. It
they are called plastics because at some stage of their manufacturing or use they have
plastic properties, they are susceptible to being molded.
This last one will be the chosen one for my model, for its
ductile characteristics, tough, dimensional stability, environmental resistance and is
recyclable!
The PVC sheets will be cut in the CNC machine that has the
art school to achieve greater cleanliness and perfection in the pieces.
For the small details such as a cable, the boot that is found in
amid all the garbage, his faithful companion, a cockroach he meets during his
mission, I will use materials that are as realistic as possible or at least that simulate the
reality, such as polymer clay. This paste is based on PVC,
(plastic that we discussed earlier). It looks similar to modeling clay but to
the difference from this, it hardens when heated in an oven. Once hardened it can
cut, paint, sand, and varnish.
For the assembly of the piece I will use cyanoacrylate adhesive (strong glue) and
for the small imperfections that may arise putty, one of the best
intended for the PVC available on the market.
When choosing the scale, we must think about the details, if we want to represent
to perfection the character or object or we will simplify some area according to the
size we choose.
The painting section is very brief, since, with the intention of differentiating it from the
a multitude of Wall-e that exist in all sizes, shapes, and materials I am going to
leave it monochrome (white or gray) that I will apply with an airbrush.
4. Technical-artistic background and/or influences of the project.
The model that has surprised me the most is the one made by Mike McMaster along with
his friend Mike Sennaque who belongs completely to another level.
After years of crafting each piece from scratch, they have created a robot.
totally functional. It is controlled by remote and is packed with features
what we see in the Disney and Pixar movie. The steps are completely
functional just like the eyebrows. Its head has approximately 270 degrees of
rotation. And the plate that marks the level of solar charge not only recreates the sequence of
load seen in the movie, but also monitors battery levels. For
supposedly recreates a whole series of tweets, sounds, and music.
It almost feels like you're inside the movie meeting the adorable Pixar robot.

both strong and weak points.
They share a great amount of planning work, a multitude of pieces that must fit together.
and that finally the joint between some and the cleaning should not be noticeable.
They complemented each other, two almost opposites, one more romantic with softer lighting tones.
blues and pinks, and another more somber and sterile, with the overexposed lighting to
create a vaster location. For inspiration to design the ruined Earth
they analyzed the city of Chernobyl.
Chernobyl, a city that became part of the Ukrainian SSR in 1921, was struck down.
due to a nuclear accident on April 26, 1986, the greatest human and ecological tragedy
of all time along with the nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan.
Reactor number 4 of the nuclear plant exploded. Since then, the radiation has
poisoning the entire territory and millions of people, leaving physical consequences
graves.
The film received very positive feedback, achieving very high ratings and being
nominated in various award categories, mainly for best picture
animated.
Throughout the history of cinema, numerous robots and androids have appeared.
Yo, robot story in which we will learn how the first ones are
automata, simple robots with limited functions and scarce
power to make decisions for themselves, up to the evolution of
the robots into true thinking machines, capable of
control the economy of the planets.
One of the most similar to my model of all the ones we are going to talk about and of which I am sure
what inspired Wall-e is, SANTI number 5, but it will end up being recognized as
Johnny 5, the protagonist of the movie Short Circuit from 1986. A comedy in which the robot...
military escapes from its creators' laboratory out of control.
They are very similar in many aspects, from the eyes, going through many
mechanisms of arms and body and even the wheels. The biggest difference is
evident, the size and although Johny 5 is much older, its appearance is more
futuristic regarding Wall-e, who in his movie must appear as an outdated robot
and that humans deem broken.
Thirteen years later we meet with, The Iron Giant, a movie about
animation directed by Brad Bird in 1999. It was nominated for Best Screenplay and the
best dramatic work. A giant fallen from space is rescued by a child from the
electrocution, although he will be pursued for his destruction by the military forces.
These are perhaps the ones I have considered that may have the most similarities to Wall-e,
because I could write thousands of pages about robots and I would not finish.
Although I would like to name two very famous movies and a series, but they do not
I am going to explain why I have considered that the androids that appear belong to another
Rama, which are almost impossible to distinguish from humans:
The first step to carrying out the project has been the gathering of many photos of
different points of view of the robot and of plans. During the search, I found some
pretty good plans (although I have changed some details).
Below are the guides by which the arm runs and the imitation of radio and charge.

We place the piece that covers this block, which unlike the previous ones has a
thickness of 10mm.
The assembly of the main pieces, which form the basic structure, is completed.
we continue with the arms, which we will later add to the main body:
The arm is composed of

Below are two circles of 1mm thickness that I have stuck to the part of
arm, also composed of 10mm plates, specifically eight. As

To be able to attach the arm to the body, I have drilled the back with a 5mm drill bit.
from the arm and inserted a 5.5 block. With a screw and a nut and turning it around
These pieces are assembled to the body to perform this action.
We move on to the wheel assembly.
They consist of a strip that simulates the grooves of the wheels of the
tanks, two guides to adapt the previous strip and shape it exactly and eight
wheels.
The first step is to attach the guides to a small section of strip and fit the teeth of
the wheel in the same.
Next, and after having let the previous step dry well with the help of heat,
We adapt the whole strip to the guides very gradually and add the other wheels.
The wheels are attached to the body using two screws that pass through, from the wheel
small upper to the inside of the main body.
The next part would be the neck, made up of many pieces, some cut in the
CNC and other hand-carved items, as is the case with the two above. I have tried to

friendly and adorable, the eyes.
It is the part that I have perhaps simplified the most due to time, complexity, and the
little information about that area. They consist of two blocks, a first one
composed of two ribs located at both ends of a strip that covers them, and
a second formed by two milled ribs in a 30mm density PVC.
And this is the result:
