1.2 Operation
The Normand Poseidon is a 'Submarine Construction' vessel.
English called Construction Support Vessel (CSV). This name is due to its
ability to position and repair equipment on the seabed. These functions
are carried out with the help of the main crane on deck and the ROVs (robots
specialized in deep diving.

The ship primarily provides its services to the production units.

of offshore oil, since from the oil well to the platform there are
hundreds of structures that are positioned on the ocean floor.

In this way, the vessel sails to a certain location, performs a

work using the crane and/or ROVs on the seabed, and upon completion of the
service, the next dive location is informed, then the boat sails to the
next location and executes the task.

SECTION 3 GOVERNMENT SYSTEM AND MANEUVER
3.1 Main Machines
The Normand Poseidon is equipped with four main engines.
built by Caterpillar type 3516TA C. Each machine has a
power of 2100 KW and is connected to a generator.
The main machines are all positioned in the machine room.
vessels and were built for manual operation in the CCM via PMS
(Power Management System). These devices can also be stopped in
emergency directly from the engine room. The ship's PMS is configured in
mode 'Loan Dependent Start', therefore if a machine is running and more
the energy required from this may provide, another machine will be activated
automatically. (The air compressors used to start the engines
are also located in the machine room.
3.2 Main propulsion
The vessel has two fixed pitch Rolls Royce Azipulls, both
with a power of 2200 Kw each. Take note, because Azipull’s are different from the
famous Azipods.
The Azipulls have a 360-degree rotation and a hydrodynamic design.
which allows for high maneuverability efficiency, consumption, and stability
directional when compared to other boats. Due to being diesel type
Electric ones also have less noise and vibration.

7
3.3 Bow Thrusters
The vessel is equipped with two tunnel thrusters at the bow.
positioned in the transverse direction. These thrusters have 1050 Kw of
each power, have fixed RPM and controllable pitch, therefore they have a
very quick response. Be aware, as the bow thrusters have no effect
significant at high speeds (above 5 knots) and should not be connected
during long and fast navigations.

3.4 Retractable Azimuthal Propulsor

The vessel is equipped with a bow thruster with a power of 883 kW.
and fixed pitch. This thruster is used exclusively in DP operations and
rarely in dockings, therefore in other situations he should be accommodated and
protected inside the hull. Attention, in movements above 3 knots this
equipment must be collected, since if subjected to high speeds
it may be damaged.

8
3.5 Control Handles
In its default configuration, the movements of the boat are controlled by
joysticks located in the bow or stern of the bridge. The joysticks
main thrusters and bow retractable thruster controllers rotate 360
degrees only move in one direction. The controls for the Bow thruster are located in the
transversal, they do not rotate and can be moved to both edges.
Attention, because on this ship, you are literally controlling the flow of
water from the propellers should turn the thrusters to starboard to steer to
port side and vice versa.

9
3.6 Helicon X3
The Helicon X3 is the Rolls Royce console through which control is performed.
remote control of the ship's propulsion system. On the screen, the operator can activate the
propulsion systems and their respective pumps, change the mode of operation of the ship and the
steering, lowering the azimuth thruster, putting the vessel on autopilot
and several other functions.

On the Normand Poseidon Bridge, there are two control screens.

Helicon X3. To define which one will be effectively controlling the
propellers, you should press the "In Command" button, when you click it you will hear
a whistle and from that moment that screen will be in control.
Always inform the on-duty Machinist that the machines will be
required, provide accurate information regarding the number of generators that will be
necessary and what type of operation will be carried out. Keep in mind that
major changes will always require more energy. For example, the use of
main crane, use of the Anti-helling system (ballast and band control) and
others.
10
After choosing a control console, you will need to activate the thrusters.
To perform such a function, navigate through the left column to the thruster tab that
if you want to activate it, turn on the pump, wait a few seconds, and then turn on the thruster.

On the control tab of the Retractable Azimuth, you can lower or raise it.
clicking on the Lift button, for example, it will start to blink, this means that it is
in the process of ascending movement. The same for the process of descent
through the 'Lower' button.

11
The main and daily use features will be presented next.
do Helicon 3X.

Maneuver: In maneuvering mode, the thrusters have an angular freedom of 360 degrees.
graus, porém a RPM será reduzida. Esse modo é utilizado nas atracações,
dredging and DP operations. Attention, do not forget to pass the configuration
from Helicon X3 to 'Maneuver' before putting the boat in DP.

Transit: This mode is configured for travel, in it the angular movement of the
thrusters are limited to 35 degrees. If the vessel is in mode
"Maneuver" and if accelerated above 10 knots, an alarm will be activated requesting
to activate 'Transit' mode. In this configuration, the system gains more
RPM, therefore it is also used to gain momentum if the boat
stay still.

12
RPM Mode: The order given on the levers is the percentage of a fixed value of
RPM, if you want to achieve significant RPM values, you must maintain a lot of order.
This mode is recommended for DP operations and moorings. The machine orders
the steering wheels become less sensitive. The load on the generator in this mode is variable.

The propeller rotation mode will reduce.
Power Mode: The order given on the levers is the percentage of charge in the

you will always notice a significant gain in RPM. The machine orders in
the magnets will become more sensitive. The load on the generator during POWER MODE stays

the engine rotation will increase.

IMPORTANT: In the routines of Normand Poseidon to exit from a

Operation DP and winning follow-up can be done as follows:
During the DP operation, the boat will be in RPM MODE and MANOUVRE. After that,
to take the command in the console of the front, prepare the vessel on the desired course,
still with little follow-up, put in Transit (note that the RPM will increase)
turn off the Bows and, upon gaining some speed, just over 5 knots, reduce
a little the order of machines and switch to Power Mode. Again you
You will see the RPM rise without giving a machine command. Always remember to check.
the load on the generators before giving command on the levers or switching to Power Mode.
It is considered good practice to always be in contact with the machine during
these moments.
13
Autopilot: After approving the vessel and reaching the desired course, one must
activate this button for navigation. This way the vessel will maintain the
Approach ordered by the autopilot console and the pilot will no longer need to
use the Helicon levers to steer the boat.

14
3.7 Dicas Rápidas de Azipull
This chapter is dedicated to providing the first basic information for
maneuver of Normand Poseidon. The system of government with Azipulls differs not
not only in maneuverability, but also in the handling of the levers.
When activating the thrusters and using the levers to control them, one must
keep in mind that you are managing the propulsor itself, therefore the
the pilot will be controlling the movements of the vectors that act exactly where
these thrusters are positioned at the stern. On a conventional vessel
to use the helm, you must move the lever to starboard to go to starboard.
however, when it comes to Azipull's, the opposite occurs, that is, one must turn the
handles for the bow to move the bow to port.
Simple Turn: The simple turn can be performed as follows, when one...
position in the controls (with the machine ahead), if you want to steer towards
port side, just turn your left hand inward about 20 degrees. Upon reaching
a comfortable reason comes back halfway. This reasoning method makes control easier
of the boat in the first moments and it's a great tip not to get confused in
start. To veer to port, turn the right hand inward, then you do not
it will be necessary to think about the inverted movements of Azipull, since to go to
left you are using the left hand and vice versa.

15
Yaw break: Upon reaching a comfortable yaw rate and returning the
stay in the middle, naturally the drag of the boat will cause the rate of turn
reduce, but if you want to break the turn, use it after positioning the two
pull the lever halfway, use the lever opposite to the direction of rotation with movement to
inside. For example, after making a turn to starboard (turning your hand to the
console the boreste inward), turn this lever halfway and then turn your hand
esquerda para dentro, rapidamente perceberá a frenagem do giro da embarcação.
Braking: In the control of the Azipulls, if you want to reduce the ship's following.
One should not give reverse propulsion directly, as at high speeds this attitude
will make you lose your shape almost completely. It should be diminished the
speed by placing one thruster against the other and increasing the power, like this
the drag generated by the thruster flow will cause the segment to fall
quickly and safely. After the speed decreases considerably
With less than 3 knots, one can give machines in reverse to stop the boat.

Berthing configuration: At the moments of berthing and unberthing it is

it is possible to control the approach very well with just one propeller, therefore

use a propeller in the longitudinal direction as a course control and
following, and the other in the transverse direction, thus you will earn a Stern

that will dock. In other words, if it is going to dock on the port side, leave the thruster on
port side for longitudinal and starboard for transversal.

SECTION 6 DYNAMIC POSITIONING SYSTEM
6.1 Dynamic Positioning System
The Normand Poseidon is equipped with a Konsberg K-Pos type DP system, a
computerized system for dynamic and automatic control of position and
approaching the vessel. The system reads the various forces felt.
through the vessels via sensors and then provides a force response
through the use of thrusters so that this external vector is nullified and the
the position of the vessel should be maintained.

The DP operator can select approaches, speeds,

movements and positions for the boat, these will be processed by the system to

an optimized configuration of the thrusters.
The DP Konsberg K-pos also has a manual joystick for control.
of the movements of the vessel.

It is very important that all operators and future operators of the system
from the DP of Normand Poseidon, read the DP Operator Manual.
vessel and the FMEA Report, in this way they will be aware of the capabilities
and system limitations.
Any Dynamic Positioning operation must always have nearby.
properly trained and qualified personnel on the walkway, in addition to that the
company procedures, orders from the commander and safety procedures
Global DPs must always be followed.
The Normand Poseidon is equipped with a DP Class II, which means that
it has equipment and connection redundancy, therefore in cases of failure
in which the system is degraded, it will still be able to function and maintain
position.

34
6.2 Reference systems
A ship operating in open sea is subject to the forces of nature, wind,
waves, ocean currents and others. All these vectors have a direct influence on
positioning of the vessel, and, as explained in the previous topic, the
the system uses the sensors to measure such forces and the thrusters to cancel them.
But how does the boat know where it should be in relation to the globe? For that
the system is also equipped with Position Reference System, they are:
2x DGPS Veripos:O sistema de DGPS oferece um sinal de localização
much more precise than GPS, as it provides a differential signal based on
both in satellite positions and in antenna positions on land,
therefore they are ideal for the DP system. Two different differential systems of
global positioning systems are installed on the boat, they receive the correction signal
via MF (IALA) and L-Band (INMARSAT). For more information, read the manual
to do Veripos.

35
HiPAP (High Precision Acoustic Positioning): HiPAP is used for a
transmitter and a receiver of hydroacoustic signals to determine the position of the
vessel in relation to a fixed structure or some submerged object (ROV). The
the Hipap control console works in a simple way, despite being a
complex equipment, one button lowers the HiPaP and another raises it, besides that the
panel warns if the HiPAP is on the hull or in the water. Attention, the equipment is very
sensitive and in no way should it be sailed with it lowered, always raise it
HiPAP before starting the trip.

Radius: Reference system that uses an interrogator (positioned in

ship) that transmits a signal to a transponder (positioned on the target, usually
on the platform), thus determining the position. The Radius can operate in
various adverse conditions. The transponder is kept on the vessel and must
to be lifted by crane to the Offshore unit when it is to be used.

36
FanBeam: The MDL FanBeam is a reference system based on
high precision laser reflection. A laser reflector must be positioned in the unit
which will serve as a fixed reference. The Fanbeam sends a laser beam that is reflected
in unity, the reception of this reflection is captured and the computerized system
calculates the distance, marking and sends this data to the DP.

Light Taut Wire: Reference system that uses a long steel wire
tied to a weight that rests on the seabed, the equipment is capable of detecting
movement of the boat through the reading of the different tensions that the cable undergoes. The
Normad Poseidon has the structure to use this DP reference system.
However, since Taut Wire is made for shallow waters and in Brazil most of the
exploration occurs in deep waters, this equipment is not found in
use at the time this manual is written. For more information about it
see the Operator Manual DP.

6.3 ASOG
The ASOG is a document that describes guidelines for safe DP operations.
each color indicating a status of the operation, according to the fulfillment of these
guidelines the operation will be within some coloring. For example, the color green
it means very safe operation, that is, the functioning of the equipment
is within safety standards. If any thruster should come to
fail, or if the environmental conditions become dangerous, the operation will change color,
for red, for example. In addition, each coloration is also linked to
an attitude that should be taken.

In a safe DP operation situation, the status of the ASOG will be green.

if the operator observes an occurrence of degradation, he has the responsibility
to change the operation status to yellow or red, for example, indicating
thus the operation stops. The ASOG is very important as it does not allow space
for subjectivism or interests regarding the issue of security, because even
if a Junior operator changes the status of the operation, the whole team will know that they must
proceed to a safe work stoppage, or even a completion
emergency.

SECTION 7 EMERGENCY GOVERNMENT SYSTEM AND STATIONS OF
MANEUVER

7.1 Emergency Government

To activate the emergency governor system of the main thrusters
you must set the frequency converter to 'Local' and then the 'Steering'
Control Panel" to "Local" as well. In these locations, there are details of how
operate the system. A Gyro Needle repeater is positioned
for sharpening reference. There is a communication set installed by
internal telephone and self-exciting telephone for communication with the bridge
during this maneuver.

To reverse the above explained procedure, move the 'Switch' from location to
remote.

from the vessel. To select an autopilot navigation, it is necessary to:
Take the command in the Helicon X3 from the front.
Bring the vessel alongside.
Check if the Autopilot panel is turned on and configured.
Turn the switch to Autopilot mode.
Select the AutoPilot on the Helicon X3 screen.

From this moment on, the turns and changes in the direction of the boat must be
made in the Autopilot console, it is also possible to select reasons for
yaw, rotation speed of the thrusters, among others.

7.3 AutoPilot for manual control

Before starting the DP tests or in approaches to port areas, the

above 30 degrees the Autopilot will be disabled automatically.

MiniWheel: By clicking once on 'Rudder Lever On' you will switch to
steering the vessel with the small steering wheel of the front console, using
only one of the main thrusters. Upon clicking "Rudder Lever" for the second time

the force vectors of the thrusters, that is, it should yaw to port to
go to the northeast and vice versa.

Manual Levers: The operation of the levers has already been explained in this
document in previous chapters, but due to its importance, it is worth mentioning
some other functions.

The Back-up button on the controllers must be activated if it is being

noticed an abnormal behavior in the control or are not
responding. This button is present on all control levers of the bridge and has
a particular signal transmission in relation to the connection used in operations
normal. Furthermore, if any thruster is having a problem, a red light
it will remain lit in the handle, in this situation it is crucial to solve the problem
before proceeding with trips or DP operations.
41
7.4 Government transition from plaintiff to defendant, and vice versa.
When switching between the bow/stern maneuvering stations, first switch
the key of the bow command station to the position where you intend to make
the maneuver, after that go to the station and select "InCommand" on the Helicon X3,
after 'Accept', you will hear a loud beep, and then you will have the command. The same
process for both stations.
In the control section of the rear, there is also a switch, this is used to play.

use the "Take" option (if you are not going to use manual mode). Remember to pass
for DP the switching before trying to enable the Positioning System
Dynamic.

SECTION 8 DOCUMENTS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT
8.1 Library and stationery
The bridge of most ships is not only a command tower.
it is also a complete nautical library, several very important documents
are available to all crew members for consultation. Various reference books
from IMO, Nautical Institute, Brazilian Navy are available in their versions
originals in Normand Poseidon. It is encouraged that the Nautical staff have
knowledge, not of the nuances of each document, but rather of where to search
certain information.
There is also a real stationery store on the promenade of the Normand
Poseidon, printers, laminators, various types of paper, inks, and many
outros. Esses materiais são muito importantes, pois além de dar capacidade ao
The production of quality documents still serves as a great help for
improvisations, since at sea the ability to "make do with what you have" is
indispensable.
The specific manuals for each device are also housed in
gangway, any specific information should be researched in these.

43
8.2 Panels of the bulkheads
At the entrance of the walkway, you will find various information panels,
from the routines of the vessel to the classification of clouds. All of these are like this
willing, as they have important information for daily use. It is recommended
that the Nautical Officers know about the arrangement of these.

8.3 Pastas

for the legal operation of the vessel. The folders contain permissions for
work, boat certificates, crew familiarizations, etc.

8.4 Lifesaving Equipment of the Bridge
The gangway of the Normand Poseidon has several equipment for
safety and rescue, all arranged for easy access and use. It is essential
that all Nautical Officers know how to use them, as well as the
positioning of these.

8.5 Acknowledgments
This manual was prepared with the help of excellent Nautical Officers who
We are attacking Normand Poseidon, we hope he can serve as a good
source of information for familiarization.
The vessel is very large and has thousands of features, therefore it is of
extreme importance that the reader continues seeking information through others
documents arranged on the boat.
Some knowledge will only come with time and practice, unfortunately this none
manual is capable of teaching. This is one of the things that make life at sea so
interesting.
Some reading suggestions after finishing this are: Salvage Manual
Normand Poseidon, DP Operator Manual, FMEA REPORT, Manual of
SOLAS LSA training and SOLAS FSS training manual.
Thank you for completing the reading, we wish smooth sailing to all!
