For the calculation of the infiltration rate (7), the column (6) is multiplied by 60 and the
the product is divided by the column (3).
Taking the results from column (4) for the x-axis and column (7),
for the ordinate, you can graph and observe the behavior of speed
infiltration.
The infiltration rate curve would be of the exponential type.
To obtain the coefficients k and n of the Kostiakov-Lewis model, we can use
various methods, the simple linear regression method, the graphical method or the method
of the averages. Being the most precise, we will explain the first one more extensively.

Simple linear regression method

We need to linearize the equation by applying logarithms to both terms of it.
how it is obtained:

what corresponds to an equation of the type of a line:

Where

In addition
Y = infiltration velocity
X = time

it is calculated as:

∑∑

To find the solution to the problem, a table can be constructed with the values
which are obtained by applying logarithms and squaring the values of the
accumulated time and calculated infiltration columns respectively.

The equation is given:

Clearing:

We can find the average as:

Also, if we know that:

∑∑

Substituting:

Substituting for

Now, if we consider the linearized equation:

And as we already know:

Therefore:

In addition:

Therefore:

Finally, the Kostiakov-Lewis model will be:

To now determine the correlation coefficient (r) of the obtained model, which is the
measure of the degree of association between variables, it is known:

∑∑

∑ ∑
√ [∑ ] [∑ ]

Substituting:

√( )( )

The coefficient of determination is also calculated ( ), which is related to (r) and

it means that the variation of Y is explained by the proposed linearized model,
according to the value obtained from ( ):
Se señala que para este caso, se considera un valor bajo de r y .

Finally, the model obtained from Kostiakov-Lewis can be used to calculate the speed of
infiltration over a specified period and obtain adjusted values:

Accumulated Infiltration
It is important to note that with the double cylinder method or the input and output method, one can
obtain the accumulated infiltration equation derived from the integration of the
Kostiakov-Leweis equation between the limits of t=0 and t=t

∫ ∫

The equation will have the same form as the following model:

Where:
Z = accumulated infiltration (cm)
K y n = coefficient of the Kostiakov-Lewis formula
The value of 60 given by the formula is a factor to express Z in cm and t in min.

Applications of Infiltration
One of the applications that can be given to the obtained model is that it can be inferred
results on irrigation time and infiltrated layer based on the formulas:

[ ]

Where:
T = irrigation time in minutes (min).
La = infiltrated sheet (cm)
n = coefficient of the Kostiakov-Lewis formula
k = coefficient of the Kostiakov-Lewis formula
We can finally deduce that:

Using the input and output test data, we can illustrate the case of the
cumulative infiltration (Infiltrated Sheet). With the corrected and adjusted values of
model obtained, we plot the points to observe the infiltration rate
accumulated.
If the equation has the form of:

Then the accumulated infiltration will be:
