Heavy peroxide mass and volume of styrene that have been used
really correctly expressed.
Knowing the molecular weights and the density of styrene (0.906 g/ml at
20ºC and 0.909 g/ml at 25 ºC), determine the moles of styrene and initiator
that have been used.
According to this experiment, how many moles of initiator are needed to
polymerize one mole of styrene without distilling? Taking into account the
ideal stoichiometry of the polymerization reaction indicated in the
theoretical basis Has the initiator been over applied?
Evolution of the mixture during heating (color changes,
bubble formation, small explosions during heating,
etc.).
Thickness of the separator and dimensions of the mold you have made expressed
correctly (mean value and estimated error).

Mass and thickness of the coated paper. Mass and thickness of the coating
polymeric. What is the relationship between the coating thickness and the thickness
of the separator used?
Coated paper weight = 0.515 ± 0.001
For the thickness, we calculate it following the theory of measures, first we find the
media, the dispersion and the percentage of dispersion to know how many measures there are
necessary, and as a result, we would need at least 50 measures.
Therefore, we could find the average of the 15 measurements and this case error will come
given by the number that is greater than the sensitivity of the instrument and D/4
As a result of the above, we have to

Calculation of the density of the polymer obtained from the dimensions and
polymer mass, with estimation of its error. Has it floated in water the
polymer? Compare the obtained density data with a reference
bibliographic.
COATING MASS 0.323 ± 0.002
COATING THICKNESS 0.257 ± 0.103
Once we have the mass and thickness of the polymer, we will be able to obtain its
density for this we need to calculate the volume of the polymer:
The volume will be
V = a*l*e = 80*30*0.257 = 616.800 mm3
The volume error will be
ErrorV = 250,027
Volume will be = 616,800 ± 250,027 mm30.62 ± 0.25 cm3
The density will be
d = m/v = 0.323/0.620 = 0.520 g/cm3
the error will be
0.212
Therefore, the density will be 0.520 ± 0.212 g/cm3
We see that the density we obtained is less than that of water, which is 1g/cm^3.
whether it floats.
Description of the optical properties of the coating, and of the
mechanical properties that you can test with your hands: adhesion to
substrate, type of fracture, hardness, flexural strength, torsion, etc.
The polystyrene we have made is transparent, fragile (it breaks before
to scratch and the fracture of the pieces fits), adapts to the paper when it
it bends due to its small thickness, but it is not very resistant to all kinds of
mechanical efforts. Hardness and stiffness must be high to have this
type of fracture. When it is cracked, it easily peels off the paper.
Find an example of a product made with polystyrene. Identify the
main properties required for this application. Could this be done?
article with the polystyrene you have made? Write down your main conclusions
on the laboratory sheet.
The general properties of polystyrene are hardness and rigidity, low resistance to
impact (depending on the type of resin used). It is used in packaging and bottling of
food.
We found multiple applications in many different fields.
some of them are:
Polystyrene packaging for food service is usually a better insulator,
keeps food fresh for longer and costs less than the others
alternatives. Polystyrene (solid and foam) is used to protect products
of consumption. Among others, the cases for CDs and DVDs, the packaging for peanuts for their
shipping, food containers, trays for birds and meat, and egg cartons
They are usually made of polystyrene to protect them from damage or deterioration.
Given its transparency and easy sterilization, polystyrene is used in a wide
range of medical applications, such as trays for cultures, test tubes,
Petri dishes, diagnostic components, housings for equipment for
medical tests and devices.
Described some of these applications, there are properties of our
polystyrene that could be useful to us such as transparency, but on the other hand
the products we described do not match the material we have
since they need to be flexible in the case of food packaging, that does not
they are fragile that have resistance to bending, among others and this does not match
with the description we made in the previous section so in these
the specific application would not work our polystyrene.
