Communication skills have become one of the most crucial skills, if not the
most important ones, in every single profession, including engineering. This
essay will briefly summarize my strengths and weaknesses in communication
and some of the methods I might use to improve them so that my career in
engineering can go flawlessly.
First comes the strengths, the thing I am most proud of is that I can be quite
flexible in many situations. To describe it in the most basic way, this skill is
simply that I can communicate in various cases regardless of the people or
the topic of the conversation. Even though this might seem to be the bare
minimum for everyone, this simple skill seems to be forgotten in the current
era, where people tend to vertically invest in a singular field. This advantage
can be useful if I need to extend my relationship circle or strengthen my own
relationship. The second thing is my pronunciation, it is not perfect, but since
I started my journey with English, I have never been complained about the
way I speak. I believe speaking with a clear and easy-to-understand voice
will make the conversation much more enticing.
On the other hand, there are still some downsides to my own communication
skills. First things first, I barely want to talk for most of the time, since that is
not what I'm really into or want to spend too much time on. The only time
that I actually speak or communicate is either with my friends or when I am
forced to. This led to the fact that when doing teamwork, I usually manage all
the jobs I could just to avoid being the one presenting, and I am even willing
to prepare the script for the presenter just to not present myself. This might
limit my own potential and ultimately disable my own advantage when it
comes to communication skills.
In my realization of my own weakness, I have been seeking a way to improve
my communication skills. First up, I need to slowly gain interest in
communication by practicing communicating every single day. This will
slowly make me feel like I want to open up to conversation, not like I am
forced. If I successfully fixed my own problem with communication, it will not
only help me in my regular life but can also help me with my professional
career by connecting me with other individuals who can have the same
inspiration, the same enthusiasm in my field, so that we can skyrocket in our
orientation.
In conclusion, communication skills are simple but hard to master. However,
when we completely master them, our professional careers will experience
significant growth.
