Rank Of Matrix

Definition :-
The Rank of a Matrix is the maximum number of linearly
independent rows or columns in a matrix. It essentially
determines the dimensionality of the vector space formed by
the rows or columns of the matrix
Rank Of a 1x1 Matrix

 For a matrix

A= a

 If a ≠0, then Rank =1

 If a= 0, then Rank = 0
RANK OF 2x2 MATRIX

Given matrix:
𝑎 𝑏
𝐴=
𝑐 𝑑

• If ∣ 𝐴 ∣= 𝑎𝑑 − 𝑏𝑐 ≠ 0, then Rank = 2
• If ∣ 𝐴 ∣= 0 and at least one element ≠ 0, then Rank = 1
• If all elements = 0, then Rank = 0
Example :

Given matrix:
1 2
𝐴=
3 4
Determinant:
∣ 𝐴 ∣= 1 4 − 2 3 = 4 − 6 = −2 ≠ 0
Since determinant ≠ 0,
Rank 𝐴 = 2
Rank Of a 3x3 Matrix

 For a 3x3 matrix :

a b c
A= d e f
g h i

 If determinant ≠ 0 → Rank = 3
 If determinant = 0 , check minor of order 2
 If all minors are zero → Rank ≤ 1
Example :
Given matrix:
1 2 3
𝐴= 2 4 6
1 1 1
Determinant:
1 2 3
∣ 𝐴 ∣= 2 4 6 =1 4−6 −2 2−6 +3 2−4
1 1 1
= −2 + 8 − 6 = 0
Since determinant = 0 → Rank ≠ 3
Check a 2×2 minor:
1 2
= 1 1 − 2 1 = −1 ≠ 0
1 1
Highest non-zero minor order = 2
Rank 𝐴 = 2
Methods To Find Rank

 There are two main methods:

 1. Using determinants
 2. Using Elementary Row operations
Rank By Determinant Method

 Steps:
 Find the determinant of the matrix.
 If determinant ≠ 0 → Rank = order of matrix.
 If determinant = 0:
 Check minors of lower order.
 The highest order non-zero minor gives the rank.
Example :

Given matrix:
1 2 3
𝐴= 2 4 5
3 6 8
• Determinant ∣ 𝐴 ∣= 0 → Rank ≠ 3
• A 2×2 minor:
2 3
= −2 ≠ 0
4 5
Highest non-zero minor order = 2
Rank 𝐴 = 2
Rank by Elementary Row Operations

• Convert matrix into row echelon form.

• Use elementary row operations:
• Row swapping
• Row multiplication
• Row addition
• Count the number of non-zero rows.
• That number is the rank.
Example :

Given matrix:
1 2 3
𝐴= 2 4 6
3 6 9
• Apply row operations
• Two rows become zero
• Only one non-zero row remains
➡ Rank = 1
Applications of Rank

• Solving systems of linear equations

• Checking consistency of equations
• Used in:
• Electrical circuits
• Control systems
• Computer graphics
• Data analysis
Rank and Consistency of Equations

• If Rank(A) = Rank([A|B]) → System is consistent

• If Rank(A) ≠ Rank([A|B]) → System is inconsistent
• If Rank = number of variables → Unique solution
Conclusion

• Rank is a fundamental concept in linear algebra.

• It represents linear independence.
• Helps in understanding solutions of equations.
• Used widely in engineering and science fields.
